Poetry in Voice Project

The Poetry in Voice Project involves the following tasks and assignments:

1) Multi-media product 2) Poetry Analysis Presentation 3) Recitation performance.

TO DO Checklist:

□ Choose your poem from PIV website

□ Make 3 printed copies of your poem. On one of them, complete a write along using the TS CASTT strategy and the Analyzing Poetry Bookmark.

□ Ask 2 classmates to complete a write along on your poem and complete a write along for classmates who ask you to do so.

□ Create a multi-media presentation of your poem (iMovie, Animoto, etc.). See criteria & rubric below. Upload your video to the Poetry Page on your website.

□ Complete the “Poetry Appreciation and Analysis Assignment” assignment and plan an oral presentation to the class.

□ Presentation – oral class presentation (whole class or small groups)

□ Performance/Recitation of your poem later in the semester at our PIV and Poetry Slam Event.

PIV Poetry Appreciation and Analysis Assignment evaluation – details given in class

1. Research your poem – How have others interpreted this poem? Who is the poet? Does knowing about the poet help you understand the poem? Create notes to record what you learned about the poet and about how others have interpreted the poem. Make sure to NOTE your source(s). It is very important that you do not plagiarize and cite your sources correctly.

2. Create an analysis presentation of your poem.

a. Refer to the Poetry Analysis handout– e.g tone, sounds, imagery, and theme. Refer to the TP-CASTT strategy to help you analyze your poem and structure your product for presentation to the class. Include an interpretation of the poem’s meaning - tell what the poem is about (refer to your research and be sure to include citations – ask for clarification if needed).

b. Identify literary devices used by the poet (e.g. alliteration, imagery, symbols, allusions, metaphors, similes, personification etc.).

c. What type of poem? (e.g. narrative, free verse, lyric, elegy etc.)

d. Include information about the poet.

e. Write a personal reflection on the poem you chose. Why did you choose this poem? What connections did/do you make with the poem? What is your golden line?

Note – you could create your Poetry Appreciation and Analysis assignment in a poster format, scrapbook format, PowerPoint format or other format if you like. Arrange to have copies to hand out on the day your present your poem to the class. Begin your presentation with a reading of your poem.

Recite or read perform your poem aloud on our Poetry Performance Day.
