Manuscripts, or final drafts, of compositions should be as nearly perfect as possible. There are certain standards which are generally accepted.

For typed work:

1. Use only one side of a sheet of white 8 ½ x 11-inch paper.

2. Use 12 point font, Times New Roman style, and double space all lines, including those in your MLA heading. This means there is a blank line in between each typed line.

3. Leave one-inch margins at the top, sides, and bottom of each page.

4. Indent the first line of each paragraph five spaces.

5. Never leave just one line of a paragraph alone at the bottom or top of the page.

6. Use the MLA heading at the top left-hand corner of your paper.

7. Center title; use same size font, no bold, no underline, no quotation marks unless the piece is a poem or short story.

8. Number pages at the top right ½” down with last name.(Create a header to do this – as demonstrated in class)

9. Staple in upper left corner.

10. Use white out sparingly.

11. Put a word count at the end of the paragraph in ( ).

Some general guidelines:

1. Spell all words correctly.

2. Use punctuation correctly.

3. Use only commonly accepted abbreviations, such as Mr., Mrs., Ms., Dr., Jr., Sr., Fr., YMCA, FBI, UN, IWA, etc.

Numbers of more than two words, such as 765, should be written in numerals (unlike sixty-five). Write out eleventh or sixth except when used with a month; then they become June 11 or September 6.
