Summary

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a company that specializes in providing study abroad services, released the 2019 QS World University Rankings on June 6, 2018. In total, more than 4,700 universities in 151 countries were evaluated and 1011 were ranked2, including 26 Canadian universities and 60 new universities in the top 1,000. The University of Saskatchewan (U of S) was ranked 461 in the world, dropping ten positions from the prior year. Considering there were approximately 26,000 universities globally, the U of S was among the top 1.8% universities in the world.

Domestically, the U of S ranked 16 among Canadian universities. The top ranking Canadian universities were University of Toronto (28), McGill University (33), University of British Columbia (47), and University of Alberta (109).

Globally, the U of S ranked highest in international faculty (223) and international students (256), and lowest in academic reputation (501+) and employer reputation (501+). The U of S improved in the international faculty indicator, but dropped in each of the other five indicators, which resulted in a slightly lower placement (461).

Compared to our U15 peers, U of S ranked highest in international students (9) and faculty per student (10), where our scores were close to the U15 medians. We ranked lowest in academic reputation (14) and employer reputation (14), where we were significantly below U15 medians.

1 The QS rankings uses z-scores to normalize the results. That is, indicator scores are calculated based on the distance between each value from the mean average of

the entire dataset. Theoretically, a U of S score of 10.7 in academic reputation means that 10.7% of the universities who participated in the QS rankings are ranked

below the U of S; or in other words, 89.3 % of the universities scored higher.
