WHY WE LOVE IT: In a landscape increasingly populated with turbo four-bangers, the 2.0-liter Mercedes motor pumps out more ponies than any other. What's more impressive? Look at those stats above again. Now do the math. We're talking a specific output of 178 hp per liter. Simply astounding.

2013 Ram 3500

DISPLACEMENT: Cummins 6.7-liter turbodiesel I6 385 hp, 850 lb-ft of torque

WHY WE LOVE IT: What exactly does "best-inclass horsepower and torque" mean? How does a 30,000-pound towing capacity sound? Or a 6,580-pound payload? Thanks to this workhorse of a motor, the Ram heavy-duty outpulls and out-carries every other pickup truck out there.

2013 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse

DISPLACEMENT: 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 1,200 hp, 1,106 lb-ft of torque

WHY WE LOVE IT: Running full-bore, the engine will drain the gas tank in less time than it takes to fill it up. OK, that's not exactly true, but at full throttle, you'll have to stop for gas every eight

minutes. It also reaches 60 mph in less than 2.5 seconds and the quarter-mile in 10.0. It's simply ridiculous. Awesomely, breathtakingly, wondrously ridiculous.

2014 Chevrolet C7 Corvette Stingray

DISPLACEMENT: 6.2-liter V8 450 hp, 450 lb-ft of torque

WHY WE LOVE IT: Chevy resurrects the venerable Stingray nameplate with yet another winning spin on the small-block formula. The LT1 mixes the best old-school bits (pushrods, 4.4inch bore centers) with the cutting edge (cylinder deactivation, direct fuel injection) to create a singular American sports-car engine.
