Danny Karrs12/4/13Dr. BlairEnglish 1103The Discourse of Being a QuarterbackFootball is one of the most popular sports in America, whether you have played it before or you are just a fan of the game, everyone knows just how special the sport is. I was lucky enough to not only play but also start at Quarterback for 3 years. I love the sport and I feel like it has done a lot for me over the years and it still is helping me now. There are many words, gestures, actions, appearances and values that are used in football, some on the everyday level and some only coaches and players would use. You hear the language of football on TV every time you watch it. But there’s a whole other level used between coaches, it’s common between everyone, words like cover 4, trap, or rim to wheel are plays everyone who has ever played football knows but you don’t really hear them on TV. There’s one more level to the language and that’s for communicating between your team, this language is usually made up by the coach to describe a play or route, this differs from team to team for secrecy. There are so many words I could fill up ten pages defining them all; I wont bore you with that. I will just tell you one of my favorite terms known by pretty much anyone who has ever played football. My favorite word in this discourse is “takeoff” but there are many different ways of saying this like “vertical”, ‘’fly”, and “go”. They all mean one thing, the receiver runs straight down the field to receive the pass from the quarterback. This is my favorite because I love throwing this route and it has scored a lot of points for me over the years. Some people may not realize it but how you look means a lot in football, like in any sport, everyone wants to wear the same things but stand out while doing it. Our school colors were black and light blue, I had light blue and black Nike vapors for two years, I never saw someone with the same cleats as me and I got many compliments on them. I also wore a light blue Nike elite sleeve on my left arm, once again I never saw anyone else with the same color sleeve. I got compliments on the way I looked a lot, but I also got compliments on the way I carried myself on the field. As a quarterback you need to have leadership composure and control. The way I carried myself was calm and collected, I was never too hyper or rattled, I always knew what was going on at all times and my actions reflected that. A player I was talking to on a team we played told me “I had a very intimidating swagger and I carried myself with confidence”. I took this as a great compliment because that’s what I was trying to accomplish. If I show confidence in the huddle, my team will feed off of that and play better. The best part about football is the game, there’s nothing that can compare to Friday night football, what makes it so great is all the hours you put in to prepare for Fridays. My favorite memory is at the end of the season last year, we played Grays Creek at home for the conference championship, it was a huge crowd and we had all the pep rallies and we were on the radio and TV and it was awesome! We were on top of the school, everyone was congratulating us around school, and it was great. After winning the conference we got a home playoff game, the first in school history, and we had even more people for that game. We won by a big margin sending us to the second round. This was the best two weeks of the season. Its different in college, I am currently at the bottom of the pool and it took some getting used too. It’s going to take some time to get back to those enjoyable parts like in high school. There are many values one can take away from football. None bigger then teamwork though, no other sport relies on teamwork more then football. The perfect example in offensive linemen, they have the hardest job on the team and get no reward for it. Everything they do is for the good of the team and I always say they never get enough credit for what they do. As a quarterback I rely on them every play and if they mess up I cant get mad because I mess up too sometimes, this is why teamwork is so important. A lot of people don’t like football because it’s a bad influence or the injuries that are involved, but in my eyes and many other people’s eyes it’s the best sport ever. There are many words, gestures, actions and values that are used in football some bad, a lot good, but either way it’s still my favorite thing to do. You have to be dedicated to this sport, the higher the level the more dedication you need. But it’s all worth it when it comes to Friday nights, Saturday afternoon, or even Sundays for the lucky ones. ................
