Theme: Pumpkins

Reading Workshop:

During workshop this week we learned how to read with a partner. During shared reading we looked for the “funny g and the funny a” in the text of a big book story. As a class, we are creating a big book from our Read Alouds. After I read a story to the class, I ask them questions about the story such as, who were the characters? Where did the story take place? What was an important part? Then, we add a picture of these things to our ABC Read Aloud Big Book. At centers, the children can go back and “read” this book.

Writing Workshop:

This week we have practiced writing to a given topic. For example, after our field trip on Tuesday we brainstormed about all of the things that we were able to do. Then, I asked them to draw, label, and write about their favorite part of the field trip. This is an activity that could easily be done at home to help your child succeed on their up coming scored writing prompt.

For word study we have transitioned from learning letter names and sounds to hearing the beginning sound of a word (picture). The kids are doing picture sorts to gain practice with this skill. Phonological awareness is critical for learning to read any alphabetic writing system. Research shows that difficulty with phoneme awareness and other phonological skills is a predictor of poor reading and spelling development.

Mathematics:

While we have continued to practice writing our numbers we have also focused on orally counting numbers from 1 to 30. To do so, we play a game call “I have ____, who has ____?” The kids really like this game and it is a great listening and thinking activity. Our first time through took over 15 minutes. Our second time through only took 9 minutes! The kiddos have also continued to work on creating and extending patterns and recognizing shapes.

A note from the teacher:

I understand that there have been a few homework assignments sent home this week so, please work on them over the weekend and return them during the upcoming week. The most important one is the timeline. Thank you!

P.S. I will be updating the classroom website over the weekend, please be sure to check it out!

Take Home Work Bags: When you receive a bag please work on it Monday – Wednesday and sent it back to school on Thursday morning. Please do not keep it over the weekend! Thank you for your participation.
