The defense came back and had a pick-six today. We’re doing good things. The offense comes back at the end. I think we are very competitive. That’s a good thing. As a coach it’s what you want to see from your teams.”On T Michael Schofield’s progress“Right now Michael can play anywhere but center. If you were a Super Bowl starter and all of a sudden you were a backup going to camp, a lot of guys would [be] bothered. They’d go in the tank, so to speak. Michael is motivated to become a better player. We’ve brought guys in here to push him and he has responded. [T Donald] Stephenson was out today. He got a little calf strain and we expect him back soon. Michael had to move around again.”On C Matt Paradis’s injury at practice“He got the wind knocked out of him. Matt is not going to miss a play. We had a very competitive practice. I don’t know what happened. I have to go back and look. He was fine. He went back in.”On the development of QB Trevor Siemian“Every time you all ask me that, I think my answer is the same. I don’t think I use the word surprise, but I think I’m excited watching him become a player. He’s very confident. He knows exactly what we are doing. He’s really a first year player in a lot of ways. You see him getting better. He had a really good practice today. Trevor is just a confident kid. He carries himself confidently [and he’s] pretty quiet. The more he continues to play, the better he is going to be. It’s a good opportunity for him to compete and become a better player. He’s doing a good job.”On Siemian’s personality“You want guys to be themselves. There are quiet quarterbacks that look quiet on the field, but in the huddle they are a little smirky and have their ways of getting guys going. Trevor has that personality. We see it in the locker room and we see it out here on the field. [QB] Mark [Sanchez] is more of an Energizer Bunny, jumping around all of the time. I just want you to be yourself. Players respond to the guys that are themselves and confident.”On the type of quarterback he was“I was a backup (laughs).”On splitting the reps in the first preseason game“I have to go back and look at how we’ll play. Obviously we are going to play three groups. We are three deep right now in camp. We’ve been holding up pretty good physically, so we should be three groups deep going into the game.”On the wide receivers and cornerbacks squaring off in practice“You really find out what they are capable of at wide out. You guys are watching [WR] Bennie Fowler become a really good player. Be watching him every day, because he goes against good people. [WR] Cody [Latimer] is night and day right now. That’s because we are competitive every day. We’re a man coverage football team and so there is no day you go out there and it’s easy to beat coverage, or someone is sitting in three-deep zone. We’re always locked up. We’re always competing. It gives you a chance to be the best you can be. As a coach it helps you evaluate when you know they are going against really good people every day.”On playing the quarterbacks with the first team“I’m going one week at a time. I am going to make a decision on what we are going to do next Thursday in Chicago, and I haven’t even come close to doing that yet.”On balancing the aggresiveness at the quarterback position“I want guys to be aggressive. I can tell you right now, as a coach, one of the things I’m coaching Mark on is when plays get extended, sometimes plays get long and some of his decision process needs to be better. That’s something we are working on. I want them to be aggressive and go make plays. Obviously the responsibility of protecting the game, not just the ball, but the game is part of their position. You have to be a good decision maker. We’re working on those things with all three of them.”On the ball Siemian throws“Trevor has a really good arm, you guys see that. He spins it really good and has the ability to get the ball down the field. He is understanding when to give guys chances, back shoulder balls, things like that. That’s just him improving as we go.”On honoring Head Athletic Trainer Steve Antonopulos for 40 years of service with the organization this week“It was Wednesday night. We had everybody come in the room and [Strength and Conditioning Coach] Luke’s [Richesson] brother had done a painting for ‘Greek.’ ‘Greek’ is forty years with one organization. ‘Greek’ is accomplished and been a part of so many things that I had to take notes down there. I couldn’t memorize all those things. I am so proud of him. He’s a friend of mine. I worked under him as a player and now I get to work with him. I love him. This organization thinks the world of him. We honored him with a nice painting the other night. We let him know how much we appreciate him. It was very special.”On Latimer and Fowler’s improvement“They are very comfortable in what we are doing, so when they come to practice, they don’t spend a lot of time thinking. They just play. When I sit down 88 [WR Demaryius Thomas] and 10 [WR Emmanuel Sanders], they get to go with the ones. I just think they are very confident right now. If Emmanuel or D.T. is going to raise their hand to come out of the game, these kids are going in there to make plays, not to the point where the others come back. They’ve got a lot of confidence in what is going on. I think we are even deeper than that when you look at [WR DeVier] Posey. Posey is doing some good stuff, [WR Jordan Taylor] ‘Sunshine’ continues to become a good player. It’s a nice problem to have right now.” ................
