The first paragraph of your essay is your introduction. This should present your topic to your reader. The last sentence in your introduction should be your thesis statement.

The body of your essay is where you prove your thesis. You should use your research to prove your points. Whenever you use information that is not your own ideas written in your own words you must provide a Parenthetical Reference which includes the author’s last name and the page number to which you are referring (Smith 145).

If there is No Author listed for your source you should use the title instead (MLA Style for Beginners 57). Underline the titles of whole books and magazines. Use quotation marks for article titles. (“How to Format with MLA” 7).

You may find that “quoting directly from another text makes your essay more interesting and reliable” (Smith 15). Short Quotations of less than 4 typed lines should be written as part of your sentence. Use quotation marks around the quotation. Include the page number in your Parenthetical References.

You may also want to use Long Quotations in your essay. Long quotations are:

quotes that are more than 4 typed lines. These should be formatted as an indented block of text. Do not use quotation marks for long quotations. (Lewis 231)

You must still include a Parenthetical References and page number.

You must also include a Works Cited page of the sources you used in your essay. Every source mentioned in your essay must be listed on your Works Cited page. Your Works Cited page includes detailed information about where a research source can be found.
