The November meeting has a scheduled speaker. The CONSUL for Switzerland Niklaus R. Schweizer HB9VP will speak.

The repeater KH6WO/R on 146.18/78 is the club repeater. Try it. The club beacon station is receiving SWL reports from all around the world. KH6WO (beacon) is part of the NCDXF world wide system and you can read all about it on the internet. and click on beacons. Want to know which bands are open to any area, this is one way to find out. I had some detailed correspondence with the FCC and the KH6WO (beacon) is NOW ALSO ON the 12, 17 and 30 meter bands. This aid to the study of HF propagation has been a boon to radio operators world wide. During the CQWW, early in the morning on 10 meters, only the KH6WO and the ZS6 beacons were loud. The KH6WO repeater has not had permission to operate on the WARC bands until now and we owe our gratitude to Bill Cross at the FCC for his help.

President's Message

Here we go again

John D. Peters K1ER

President HARC

BETTER CONDX IN 2006

If you are not active and on the air because you think the Sun Spots are down and there is nothing to work, you're making a big mistake. The bands are open all the time to some DX you need. You must work harder and longer because the openings are sometimes short, but the chase is the fun. The CQWW DX Phone Contest was the last weekend in October and Tet AH7C worked over 3,300 contacts. There were nearly NO SUNSPOTS and 10 meters was dead. Almost no contacts on 10 meters! What a decline from 2004 BUT some stations K3LPL, K3LR did extremely well from MD. Tet worked mostly USA and Japan to give out Hawaii. John K1ER had his rotor in several pieces and the tower lowered. But it is a great time to be ON THE AIR and enjoying your radio. Just think how wonderful it will be at the peak of the next solar cycle.

If you prefer working locals, 7088 at 4 pm local finds a gaggle of KH6 talking about the local weather.

HARC will continue to support the growth of amateur radio in the Solomon Islands H4. And the development of more radio amateurs in countries that need help. Your donations of working equipment and useful books for beginner hams are still welcome.

And if you like politics, you really should be an active member of ARRL.

ARRL MEMBERSHIP is useful to you and can benefit HARC. The ARRL has decided to resume giving credit to HARC for BOTH NEW and RENEWING ARRL Members who join/rejoin via HARC. DO NOT RENEW or JOIN directly, do it through HARC. Contact me and I’ll do the paperwork and YOU PAY THE SAME DUES. But ARRL gives a share to HARC. Our SM Kevin is also the President of the EARC and can answer any question about HAWAII/OAHU Emergency Communications. BE PREPARED. Be the only house with lights AND A WORKING RADIO during and after a storm.

There will not be another HAMFEST in 2006 similar to the one held in 2005 at the Aiea Elementary School. The lack of volunteers to set up a hamfest has caused all effort to cease for 2006.

This is a good time to work on your station and prepare for the next eleven year SUNSPOT cycle which will start in 2006. We have plenty of experts who will tell you what you need to do. I just overhauled my TelRex A2140RISX. I installed a 1 hp motor and new 5 wire synchro and again have control over the antennas on my tower.

It is important to recruit new radio amateurs. If you have friends who show interest in your station, encourage them! Tell them about the Gordon West License Manuals available at Radio Shack, or better yet have one you can loan them.

More WebPage BPL comments:

The league just doesn't "get it", do they?

Rather than spending millions of our dollars (yes, millions!) chasing a

POLITICAL resolution to this issue which they can't possibly win, why don't

we take the money we spend on Sumner and Imlay and hire a bunch of Ed

Hare's and do the SCIENCE necessary to discredit BPL.  Haynie/Sumner/Imlay

are political lightweights giving Amateur Radio the image of a bunch of

obstructionist amateurs (lower case amateur).

A BOOK REVIEW OF HAM RADIO FOR DUMMIES (HRFD)

By Lee Wical KH6BZF

In Radio Lingo Q5, this book means excellent readability!

If you are thinking about getting into Amateur Radio, this is the book you should read first.

If the ink is still wet on your FCC License, this is the book you should read NOW.

Even if you have a collection of licenses dating back to Marconi, this is the book you should read to make sure you are up-to-date; you will find something interesting that you did not know in this book. I think HRFD is one of the most comprehensive and readable overviews of Amateur Radio.

Let me emphasize that word “overview.” Will you be able to take and pass your Technician Class license after reading this book? The answer is “NO!” You will still need to study the practice questions located at before you sit for the exam. HRFD provides very little depth on any individual topic; HRFT’s strength lies in providing a broad, very readable survey of the many aspects of Amateur Radio. It has something to say about how to get a license; the various radio modes of AM, FM, SSB, CW and RTTY; buying equipment; on-the-air etiquette; DXing; Contesting; Public Service opportunities; low-power operating; Amateur RV; TOR; PSK; Packet: WLAN; Satellite; and computer resources for learning more, to name a few topics in HRFD.

So why recommend reading HRFD first? Because the test prep books are focused on preparing you to pass an exam. HRFD is focused on giving one a perspective that will make relevant the cold facts you will learn form the test prep practice exams.

If you have a relatively new license, you know there is still a lot to learn about this fine hobby, or should I say avocation. HRFD is a good place to discover more about the various things you may do with your license. HFRD is like having your own personal “Elmer” at your elbow. On the other hand if you want to learn about capacitance, resistance, inductance and oscillation so that you can go for your Amateur Extra Class, take a hike: this is NOT the book for you. You need more than this book. (You need the Gordon West Book-John .)

For you old-timers, and you know the term has nothing to do with your age or your attitude, you know that Amateur Radio is constantly evolving. Maybe you have not been able to spend the time needed to keep up with the field because you have decided that raising a family, your job is more important than raising a DX contact. Whatever reason, if you need a quick overview about any Amateur Radio area, reading HRFD is a quicker way to get back up-to-date than reading all your old QST and CQ magazines. And if you need more depth, HRFD will show you where to find the latest information, and a lot of it is only a computer keystroke away.

As you can see, I am really impressed with this book, authored by Ward Silver, N0AX.

ARRL manuals are good at being very comprehensive with whatever they cover. Unfortunately that completeness often comes with dryness of both style and format. The 300+ pages of HRFD, on the other hand, are easy to read. I recommend you obtain a copy of HRFD now; it is worth the price. Don’t wait for second-hand copies to start showing up in the used book stores. HRFD is a keeper, so you might have a long wait.

End of Book Review-Thanks very much Lee-----John

Book Review

By

Lee Wical KH6BZF

Our HARC Director Lee has provided a book review of “Ham Radio for Dummies” which is similar to the other excellent books covering computers, software, and technical subjects in a manner actually easy to understand. They are available in most book stores, including Borders, Barnes and Nobel and Ham Radio Outlet or AES.

This is a much more readable book than the typical handbooks and more comprehensive. If you don’t believe it ask John K1ER to let you read the ARRL 1926 Handbook (the most readable of their Handbooks.)
