Board on a portion of the Mid State Trail which is part of the G.E.T. that runs from Alabama to New York. The terrain is mostly level although often uneven. The hike will start on the Mid State Trail where the rocks get larger until they are able to be crawled through. Pause at the Haunted Vista and return on dirt roads passing multi-colored streams (mining restoration). The hike will cross several un-bridged streams. The trail goes through the woods behind the lake and includes signs to identify selected trees. This is an easy hike with one sharp decline that lasts about 100 feet. There is one stream crossing that can usually be accomplished without getting wet. The wildflowers are usually beautiful along the second half of this trail. This moderately difficult, but very scenic loop offers hikers the chance to experience one of Pennsylvania’s most popular hiking trails, the West Rim Trail. Along the trail is an old dynamite shack which, many years ago, was used by the Civilian Conservation Corps to store the dynamite used to construct roads and trails. The hike offers hikers a taste of the rugged Pennsylvania Grand Canyon’s southern section, a gorgeous view up and down the canyon, and the lovely 30 ft. falls on Bohen Run. This vista gives you an incredible view of the Pine Creek Valley including the village of Blackwell, Babb’s Creek, Pine Creek South, and the plateau to the west. Follow the Mid-State Trail off the summit into Brill Hollow down to Big Run Rd and hike along the dirt road back to Blackwell. As with most wild areas attempts have been made to keep the area wild and thus heavy trail maintenance should not be expected. Some points of interest that the hike features are the Hessel Gessel millstone quarry site, trout streams, the “Big Rocks” of Asaph, interesting rock formations, and multiple wetlands. The hike is rated extremely difficult due to rolling terrain, some ups and downs (not steep), some rocky sections and roots, some rock scrambling, protentional bushwhacking, and one unbridged stream crossing. Expect some wet trail. This is a mostly level trail with a barely noticable decline on the way down that is slightly noticeable as an incline on the way back. The path is wide and well cared for as it follows the Pine Creek through the gorge area. Citings of blue herons, mergansers, mallards, wood ducks, bald eagles, turkey vultures, and more are common along the water way. Rattlesnakes are also present and should be treated with respect. The ride will begin at Wellsboro Junction. The turning point of the ride will be at the bottom of the Turkey Path where the Four Mile Run cascades down in multiple small waterfalls into Pine Creek. This trail has some bridges and/or rock stepping stones over wet areas. In the case of high water an alternate route has been located for one of the potentially deeper stream crossings. A beaver house plus many signs of beaver activity may be seen in this area. From the boating area the trail generally follows the lake shore in a southerly direction for about one mile, ending at the dam breast of Hills Creek Lake. This section of the trail offers an excellent variety of bird life attracted by seeds from white spruce, red-osier dogwood and viburnum shrubs that dominate this moist area. The trail then parallels the park road through Picnic Area No. 1 and passes the park office. It ends at a parking lot beyond the gate on the main entrance road. Osprey, loon and waterfowl visit the lake which boasts a variety of warm-water fish species. I runs between about 20-60 feet above the rail trail with lovely views of the creek. At the 3 mile point (with a rest room), and the intersection with Dry Run Trail, turn round and come back along the Pine Creek Rail Trail. We will continue back to the Resource Center to complete the 10K (6.1 mile) hike. We will then meet up with one of DCNR's Naturalists, who will present a program in the beautiful Resource Center on the history and flora and fauna of the Pine Creek area. This loop hike starts out on the Pine Creek Rail Trail, goes past a waterfall at Stone Quarry Run, and then follows the run to climb out of the canyon on a rocky trail. The hike will then follow easy, but possibly muddy, old timber roads to the peak of Fork Hill before descending shortly to Johnson Cliff and then into Blackwell at a 20% grade. Other points of interest include a view of Pine Creek’s Owassee rapids, pine plantations, and hemlock ravines. Caution: This hike is not recommended for those with a severe fear of heights since part of the trail runs along the West rim of the Pine Creek Gorge.
