World Read Aloud Day is a global literacy initiative focused on motivating children, teens, and adults to share the power of words with one another. Former Denver Nuggets player Ervin Johnson and local award-winning children’s author M.J. Evans joined Book Trust in reading aloud to students. Book Trust uniquely delivers choice and ownership of books to kids from low-income families, empowering children to pursue their reading interests and develop a love and appreciation for reading and learning. To date, Book Trust has put over 60,000 books in the hands and homes of Munroe Elementary students and delivered 3.5 million books to children in fifteen states.Students at Munroe Elementary teacher Rachel Nyberg-Hampton’s 5th grade class received a new delivery of books from Book Trust. “This organization does an incredible thing for kids. When the books are delivered each month, you can see the excitement on my students’ faces. They take their books home and share them with their families. By the end of the school year, they have 20-30 books to add to their home libraries. Reading becomes special.”Local award-winning author, M.J. Evans read to students from her book Behind the Mist, the first book in a trilogy recently the recipient of the Mom’s Choice Gold Medal Award. Ervin Johnson, retired NBA basketball player and Community Ambassador for the Denver Nuggets, talked to students about the importance of education and reading. “Education is the foundation to your success,” he told students. “What you put into your education, you will get out of it.” “When our students hear people they admire talk to them about the power of education and learning, that is something that sticks with them. It’s wonderful to show them that adults want to share the fun and excitement of reading.” said Dr. Abigail Brown, Principal of Munroe Elementary. In 2001, Adrienne Schatz founded Book Trust to help students gain access to books and develop a love for reading. She started with a small pilot program of 170 students in Larimer County, providing students money to select and purchase their own books. Today, Book Trust serves over 36,000 kids in fourteen states and still operates with its original mission: provide kids with books they choose themselves and that become their very own. “Studies prove book choice and ownership inspire a child’s passion for reading and contribute to strong literacy skills and life-long learning,” said Book Trust Executive Director Amy Friedman. “Our goal is to ensure every child may choose a book of his or her own. We know the act of choosing a book ignites interest in reading, sparks conversations about reading among kids and families, and helps cultivate a passion for reading and learning.” Photos included, credit: Phillip PostonCaptions: Local author M.J.
