Course Overview English 9 students will prepare for the English Keystone Composition Exam (tentatively scheduled for May 2016) and the English Keystone Literature Exam (sophomore year) by developing multiple-paragraph compositions throughout the school year. Students will:Improve critical thinking and analytical skillsReview correct grammar and usage Read, interpret, and analyze literature across several genresPractice speaking and listening skills through informal and formal presentationsDevelop research skills and produce a research paper Use technology to conduct research and publish essays (students will be graded on prewriting, outlines, drafts, revisions, and final copies for each essay assignment) Earn at least 25 Accelerated Reader points per marking period (or complete an alternate assignment as determined by Mrs. Schultz)Use Study Island to develop and master skills evaluated by the English Keystone Composition ExamAcquire and apply a robust vocabulary from Latin and Greek rootsII. BenchmarksBenchmarks are culminating activities, or performance-based assessments, based on the Pennsylvania Department of Education Common Core Standards. The goal is for all students to achieve at or above 75% accuracy on each benchmark. Because these benchmarks are worth double or triple the value of other major assignments, students who do not complete them may be in danger of failing for a nine-week marking period or the entire year. The following benchmarks are required for English 9 students:Narrative/Reflective EssayDifferentiated Writing ProjectResearch EssayArgument EssayIV. Grading/Assessment100-93 A; 92-85 B; 84-77 C; 76-70 D; 70-below FStandard Grading Policy as outlined in the BAHS Student Handbook:Course Notebook: Students will be responsible for bell ringer activities and notes. Each entry should be dated and neat. Notebooks may be graded for accuracy once a marking period.Course Binder: Students will be responsible for all handouts given throughout the year. Handouts should be dated and annotated. Binders will be graded once a marking period at most. Homework: Students will have both reading and writing assignment throughout the year. ?Tests/Quizzes: Students will be assessed on vocabulary, reading assignments, grammar and usage, and the fundamentals of writing. Spelling will count.Accelerated Reader: Students must earn a minimum of 25 points per marking period to receive credit. Failure to complete this assignment will significantly affect a student’s grade. After completing an AR test, a printout of the score must be handed in to Mrs. Schultz to receive credit. (Students should ask Mrs. Schultz or Mr. Burrell for help with printing scores if needed. An alternate assignment may be given at Mrs. Schultz’s discretion.)Missed/Late Assignments: After 2 days, a student will receive no higher than a 50% for a missed or late assignment. After 5 days, the grade will be a 0%. Make-up tests or quizzes must be scheduled for before school, after school, or during a study hall. Students may not use class time to make up a test or quiz. Students who are in school for part of a day on which an assignment is due, but miss class because of an excused appointment, are required to turn in the assignment by 2:30 on the required day. ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????Exceptions will be made for long-term absences with permission from Mrs. Schultz. Late work due to an unexcused absence will receive a 0% with no opportunity for a make-up. Cheating and Plagiarism: Cheating and plagiarism on any assignment will result in a 0% for that assignment and a conference with parents, faculty, and administration. Final Grade: The final grade for each marking period is calculated by adding together the total points earned and dividing it by the total possible points. Final Exam: There will be a final exam at the end of the fourth marking period. The final exam will be a cumulative test of everything learned throughout the year.V. ?Classroom/Behavior Expectations: Failure to comply with any of the following expectations will result in formal disciplinary action and parental notification.
