Thank you for your interest in the Gloucestershire Dementia Link Worker Award.So that you are aware of the requirements of the Level 3 award in awareness of dementia I have outlined the Learning Outcomes & recommended study time for each Unit. To achieve the level 3 award learners must achieve a pass in the following four mandatory units:Each unit will be assessed by assignments covering underpinning knowledge and you need to be confident in your ability to express yourself in writing at this level & very importantly have the time available to complete the assignments. You will need to discuss with your manager how much study time the organisation will support but you do need to be prepared to study in your own time. It is not possible to complete the assignments in work time alone. Unit 101 Understand the process and experience of dementia Assignment overview: In this assignment you will show your understanding of how the different types of dementia affect the brain and cause different symptoms for individuals.You will look at the impact a diagnosis of dementia might have on, individuals, their families and friends. Finally, by comparing a person-centred approach, you will be able to identify techniques to support individuals when their skills and function may vary from day to day.Unit aim:This Unit provides the knowledge of the neurology of dementia to support the understanding of how individuals may experience dementia.It is recommended that 22 hours should be allocated to this unit - 6 hours will be tutor led. Learning OutcomesUnderstand the neurology of dementiaUnderstand the impact of recognition and diagnosis of dementia Understand how dementia care must be underpinned by a person centred approachAssessment Criteria - in writing you will be able to;Describe a range of causes of dementia syndromeDescribe the types of memory impairment commonly experienced by individuals with dementia.Explain the way that individuals process information with reference to the abilities and limitations of the individual with dementia.Explain how other factors can cause change in an individual’s condition that may not be attributable to dementia.Explain why the abilities and needs of an individual with dementia may fluctuate.Describe the impact of early diagnosis and follow up to diagnosisExplain the importance of recording possible signs or symptoms of dementia in an individual in line with agreed ways of working.Describe the impact of receiving a diagnosis of dementia on -The individual-Family & friendsCompare a person centred and a non -person centred approach to dementia careDescribe a range of different techniques that can be used to meet the fluctuating abilities and needs of the person with dementia Describe how myths and stereotypes related to dementia may affect the individual and their carer.Describe ways in which individuals and carers can be supported to overcome their fears.Unit 102 Understand the administration of medication using a person centred approachAssignment overview: In this assignment you will investigate the medications commonly prescribed to relieve the symptoms of dementia, and how these present both risks and benefits.Unit aimThis Unit is about knowledge and understanding of individuals who may have specific needs for receiving medication because of their experience of dementia (You will develop knowledge but this unit cannot confirm competence)It is recommended that 15 hours should be allocated to this unit - 6 hours will be tutor led. Learning OutcomesUnderstand the common medications available to, and appropriate for, individuals with dementia.Understand how to provide person centred care to individuals through the appropriate and effective use of medication.Assessment Criteria - In writing you will be able to;Outline the most common medications used to treat symptoms of dementia.Describe how commonly used medications affect individuals with dementiaExplain the risks and any benefits of anti-psychotic medication for individuals with dementia.Explain the importance of recording and reporting side effects /adverse reactions to medication.Describe how medication can be used to support individuals who may be in pain.Describe person-centred ways of administering medicines whilst adhering to administration instructionsExplain the importance of advocating for an individual with dementia who may be prescribed medication.Unit 103 Understand the Role of Communication & Interactions with People who have Dementia.Assignment overview: This assignment deals with communication and interaction with individuals who have dementia .It looks at the different ways an individual may communicate and how these may be misinterpreted. It considers the impact of external factors on communication and interaction. You will also be asked to compare reality orientation approaches with validation approaches to communication.Unit aimThis Unit provides the underpinning knowledge to develop therapeutic relationships with individuals who have dementia based on interactions and communication.It is recommended that 26 hours should be allocated to this unit - 6 hours will be tutor led. Learning OutcomesUnderstand that individuals with dementia may communicate in different ways.Understand the importance of positive interactions with individuals with dementia.Understand the factors which can effect interactions and communication of individualswith dementia.Assessment Criteria - In writing you will be able to;Explain how individuals with dementia may communicate through their behaviour.Give examples of how carers and others may misinterpret communication.Explain the importance of effective communication to an individual with dementia.Describe how different forms of dementia may affect the way an individual communicates.Give examples of positive examples of positive interactions with individuals who have dementia.Explain how positive interactions with individuals can contribute to their wellbeing.Explain the importance of involving individuals with dementia in a range of pare a reality orientation approach with a validation approach.List the physical and mental health needs that may need to be considered when communicating with an individual with dementia.Describe how the sensory impairment of an individual with dementia may affect their communication skills.Describe how the environment might affect an individual with dementia.Describe how the behaviour of carers or others might affect an individual with dementia.Explain how the use of language can hinder positive interactions and communication.Unit 104 Understand the diversity of individuals with dementia and the importance of inclusion.Assignment overview: This assignment looks at the need to recognise that each person with dementia is a unique individual with their own specific needs. It asks you to think about how a person’s heritage may affect them and why it is important for those who care for the individual to understand and appreciate differences.Unit aim:This Unit covers the concepts of equality, diversity and inclusion that are fundamental to person centred care practice. It is recommended that 23 hours should be allocated to this unit - 6 hours will be tutor led. Learning OutcomesUnderstand the concept of diversity and its relevance to working with individuals who have dementia.Understand that each individual’s experience of dementia is unique.Understand the importance of working in a person centred way and how this links to inclusion.Assessment Criteria - In writing you will be able to;Explain what is meant by the terms; -Diversity, anti-discriminatory practice, anti-oppressive practiceExplain why it is important to recognise and respect an individual’s heritage.Describe why an individual with dementia may be subject to discrimination and oppression Describe how discrimination and oppressive practice can be challenged.Explain why it is important to identify an individual’s specific and unique pare the experience of an older person with a younger person living with dementia.Describe how the experience of an individual’s dementia may impact upon carers.Describe how the experience of dementia may be different for individuals -Who have a learning disability-Who are from different ethnic backgrounds-Who are gay or lesbian-At the end of lifeDescribe ways of helping an individual’s carers or others understand the principles of person centred careExplain how person centred working can ensure that an individual’s specific and unique needs are met.Identify practical ways of helping the individual with dementia maintain their identityExplain how current legislation and policy supports person centred working ................
