Why Use KeepSafe

Specifications

Introduction

KeepSafe is an amazing new program that integrates data backup/archiving directly into the file system of Microsoft Windows.  It takes backing up of critical data out of the hands of users and makes it a seamless component of the operating system.

When installed, KeepSafe can be configured to protect certain file types (ex: .DOC, .XLS, .PST, etc.) or entire directories (ex: "My Documents").  From then on, any time anything changes one of those files, KeepSafe will automatically back up the existing file to a user-defined location (typically a server, external drive, or backup directory on local machine).

Best of all, KeepSafe can keep multiple revisions (the number set by the user).  Hence, if a key data file gets corrupted, the user can right click on that file, and choose to return to a previous version of that file from 20 seconds ago or 20 days ago.

KeepSafe works without the user even realizing its working. It's completely seamless. Users never have to remember to backup their important files anymore. KeepSafe does it automatically.

Features

KeepSafe is a client-based data protection system. Unlike brute-force protection schemes, users control exactly which files, folders, and file-types they want protected to ensure that disk space is not wasted and performance maintained at the highest levels.

KeepSafe will store backups of protected data to any location the user desires: local hard drive, USB drive, network server, etc. As a result, KeepSafe can be set up as a seamless real-time backup system.

KeepSafe integrates directly into the Microsoft Windows file system. It works at the same level as the operating system. Stardock’s award-winning development teams have years of experience in creating software for Windows that integrates into the operating system. As a result, users can be assured that KeepSafe works as if it were natively part of Microsoft Windows.

Here are some of the features of KeepSafe:

• Saves time and reduces cost of operations - KeepSafe is the perfect solution for the small to mid-sized business. If you have ever had a mission-critical document become corrupt or if you have ever accidentally saved over a needed file, you know how costly that can be in terms of time and effort.

Until now, only large companies could afford version-control systems. But with KeepSafe’s easy-to-use interface, you set it once and all your files are protected.

You select the file types, the number of versions that you want to keep and the location for saved copies (internal hard disk, external drive or server), and you are protected. If you need to recover a file, the Recovery Wizard will guide you through the steps. Or just right-click on a file and KeepSafe will show you all available versions. Just choose the one that you need.

• Supports multiple file types - In today’s busy world, we all wear many hats, often working with many types of files. In the morning, we may work on a contract document, in the afternoon a spreadsheet, and before we go home we may work on a graphics file or web page. With KeepSafe, you just set your file types from a list or add new ones, and KeepSafe does the rest.

• Restore only what you need - Most other recovery utilities were not designed with users in mind. They restore an entire volume when all you need is one file! With KeepSafe, you restore only what you need.

And unlike backup solutions that provide "point in time" restore which may be hours or days out of date (since the last backup), KeepSafe let's you keep copies each time you save an updated file.

• Simplicity - Easy to use, easy to configure, and easy (and safe) to forget about until you need it.

• IT friendly - No need for additional server hardware, licenses or changing your users work habits to perform all work on network shares (though KeepSafe will also archive copies of files saved to mapped network drives).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the system requirements for KeepSafe?

A: The following table lists the operating systems supported by KeepSafe.

|Operating system |Supported |

|32-bit Windows XP Home |( |

|32-bit Windows XP Professional |( |

|32-bit Windows XP Media Center |( |

|32-bit Windows Server 2003 |( |

In addition, KeepSafe requires a mapped drive between the source and target computers in order to save files on another computer on the network.

KeepSafe does not support the following:

• Older operating systems such as Windows ME, Windows 98, or Windows 95.

• Itanium processors.

Q: Does KeepSafe take the place of a regular backup routine?

A: No, KeepSafe isn’t a complete back-up system. It does not archive any files on your system that have not been edited or modified first. KeepSafe only backs up the previous versions of files when you save a new revision.

KeepSafe isn’t going to protect you if your hard disk crashes and the target or secondary directory is on the same hard disk as the primary directory the file was originally saved on.

Q: Where can I store my revisions?

A: The default location is C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Stardock\KeepSafeArchive. However, you can change this to any location you choose, from an external drive, a network drive or even another computer in your home or office.

Q: Does KeepSafe require any specific hardware to be purchased?

A: No, although you should keep in mind that it is wise to keep copies of your files in a separate location should your hard disk crash.

Q: Can I exclude file types?

A: Yes, KeepSafe is configurable to your needs. If you work with large files such as graphics or video files you can exclude those from the revisioning process to save disc space.

Q: What is the ThinkDesk Suite?

A: ThinkDesk is a collection if tools designed to allow users to enhance their productivity. Each component of ThinkDesk is very different from other components but when put together they provide users with the ability to greatly enhance their productivity by making the most of their available computing power. Q: Is KeepSafe easy to use? Even for a "non-techie"?

A: Yes, an easy set-up wizard walks you through the steps in minutes. If you need to reconfigure your settings you can do that at any time by accessing the KeepSafe icon in the system tray.

Q: Does KeepSafe do anything to the applications I’m using?

A: No, KeepSafe does not affect your other applications.

Q: Does KeepSafe do anything to the file I am working with?

A: If the file you are working with is being protected by KeepSafe, each time you click save KeepSafe will make a copy of the file and store it in a location of your choosing. It does not affect the file in any other way.

Q: If I buy the standard version of KeepSafe, can I upgrade to the ThinkDesk suite later?

A: Absolutely! If you have already purchased one component of the ThinkDesk suite you can upgrade to the whole suite at a discounted rate. See the website for details: .

Q: How exactly does KeepSafe work?

A: First, you must install the KeepSafe software on your computer. When installed, KeepSafe can be configured to protect certain file types (ex: .DOC, .XLS, .PST, etc.) or entire directories (ex: "My Documents"). Afterwards, any time one of those file types is saved, KeepSafe will automatically back up the previous version of the file to a location of your choice, such as a server, external drive, or backup directory on the local machine.

Best of all, KeepSafe can keep multiple revisions. If a key data file gets corrupted, the user can right-click on that file, and choose to return to a previous version of that file from 20 seconds ago or 20 days ago. There are no hot keys or hot buttons that need to be pressed. The archive process is automatic.

Q: My boss just told me he wants a version of the contract from a week ago, but I’ve already saved over it with changes. Can KeepSafe help me?

A: Yes! KeepSafe was designed for just this kind of situation. You can recover the file you want by accessing the KeepSafe logo in the system tray or by right-clicking on the file itself.

Q: My computer crashed before I had a chance to save the file. Can KeepSafe help me?

A: No. KeepSafe requires that you save the file. Each time you click on save (or your program auto-saves) a revision copy is made of that file. However, if you don’t save the file then it can’t be recovered.

Q: I work on documents with a co-worker or group. Can KeepSafe help us?

A: Yes. If you and a co-worker each have a computer connected by a Windows network with mapped drives and both have KeepSafe installed, when you save a document, that document can be saved on your co-worker’s computer. If they change the document their version will be saved on your computer. Each party will automatically have access to the last edit.

This is also perfect for workgroups who need to access the same documents. All users would set their target location to the same location on the other computer. KeepSafe versioning of the document allows users to access prior edits. This is a cumbersome use of KeepSafe if you have extensive subdirectories where you store your documents. It is effective but you have to reset the target utilizing the Settings tab to save the document in the location where the document originated from.

Why Use KeepSafe

KeepSafe, ultimately, is designed primarily for users who want to increase the amount of protection on their files, and reduce the risk of file loss.

You need KeepSafe if:

• You have ever had a mission-critical document become corrupted while you were working on it, or if you have ever accidentally saved over a file. Instead of losing everything, you can go back to the previous version KeepSafe saved for you.

• You work in a group that collaborates to create documents. KeepSafe ensures that all of your versions are maintained.

• You or one of your employees has ever lost work due to a power outage or computer failure. KeepSafe minimizes damage and lost time by keeping real-time copies of a document on a server or external drive.

• You need an easy, reliable way to protect all your important files. Once you’ve configured KeepSafe, it automatically saves copies of those files in real-time.

• You need an easy, intuitive way to store and locate earlier versions of your work. KeepSafe keeps file revisions in real-time as you work, so you never have to worry about losing earlier versions. Simply right-click on a file and KeepSafe gives you a list of all the versions of that file to choose from.

• You don’t want to routinely keep revisions of large graphic or video files. You can exclude those huge files from the KeepSafe protection process to save space on your drive.

KeepSafe: Easy to use, easy to configure and easy (and safe) to forget about it until you need it.
