Both the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association has the following information regarding course certificates during COVID-19.

American Red Cross

The American Red Cross is closely monitoring the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and focusing on the best ways to carry out our lifesaving mission. In doing so, we recently created provisional courses that will still allow our customers to get the training they need, but with distance learning during this public health emergency.

These new courses, named Provisional Certification courses, require customers to initially take an online portion for the course and then complete the skills portion at a later date.

Currently, we are offering Provisional level, blended learning courses in First Aid/CPR/AED and Basic Life Support (BLS). After successfully completing the online portion of the course, a provisional certificate is issued. This provisional certificate states the online portion of the blended learning course has been completed and that the student has 90 days to fulfill an in-person skills check. This provisional certificate can be used by employers and students during this public health emergency as an interim solution. After the skills check has been successfully completed, the customer will receive an American Red Cross certificate for the class taken. The certification meets OSHA requirements for first aid, CPR and AED training and regulatory, licensing and accreditation requirements for Basic Life Support.

American Heart Association (AHA):

Given the ongoing threat of exposure to COVID-19, with many communities under shelter in place orders to minimize the spread of the disease, the AHA is extending AHA Instructor and Provider Course Completion Cards for 120 days beyond their recommended renewal date, beginning with cards that expire in March 2020.

The American Heart Association offers blended courses that include an online portion and hands-on skills. Upon completion of the online portion, students must complete a hands-on skills session with an AHA BLS or Heartsaver Instructor. AHA does not have an extension for completion of the hands-on training portion for blended courses during COVID-19. However, some training centers offer options. Students would need to contact them directly to find out options available.
