Academy Lecture – Jedidah IslerDr. Isler talks about her story of becoming an astrophysicist and the challenges that comes with it. Odds were against her because of race and who she is. Around her time, there were only 18 black women in the United States that had ever earned a PhD in a physics related field. However, her strong mentality and beliefs carried her to her dream goal. She became the first black woman to receive a PhD in astrophysics from Yale. Her strong belief in diversity to STEM and science enabled her to jump over obstacles and reach the ultimate goal. This session clarified the need for a strong belief in leadership. In other words, value is an important element when leading. Dr. Isler shows that having a strong belief in something and staying true to it will dictate success. It is clear that a leader with a strong value can be able to do a lot of things. He or she can motivates followers and other groups of people. The leader can also make right decisions more often than wrong ones. He or she can share the values to followers which attributes to influence. And influence goes hand to hand with motivation. Value is a part of an intricate network of other qualities in leadership. The degree to which it affects those qualities all depend on the nature of commitment and willingness. There is no leadership without values. Two important values I try to stick with when leading the Korean Student Association here at Baylor are organization and relationship. Because I value organization, which associates with structure and order, I always tend to keep things in the right sequence and consolidate agendas. Also my value in relationship makes me engage with my members and talk with them to know them better. This way I am able to form a bond and establish a common ground. ................
