RELIGION LEARNING CENTERS

I will give you a sheet of butcher paper. You will visit various “learning centers” around the classroom to construct a poster using the spatial lens that geographers use. You must visit each center, but you will need to use your own creativity to make the poster.

UNIVERSALIZING & ETHNIC RELIGIONS

-Reference materials include your textbook and materials at each learning center.

← Somewhere on your poster, explain what makes the major world religions universalizing or ethnic…”These religions are universalizing or ethnic because….”

← Now go to each of the following learning centers. It does not matter in which order you visit them and you will have the rest of the week to finish. Please, no more than five at a station at a time!!!

|1 |Where and Why Mental Map. |

|(20 min) |Using the various maps and readings in your textbook, create a mental map of the world showing the diffusion of the three |

| |universalizing religions (including the hearth of each religion). For each of the three religions list major branches or |

| |sects. Be sure to include a key. When you are finished with your map paste it to your poster. Create another map that |

| |shows the location of 3 ethnic religions (Hinduism, Judaism, Shintoism). |

|2 |Religion in the Cultural Landscape |

|(20 min) |Using the information you have gained, draw significant elements of the religion visible in the cultural landscape. |

| |Include building types and holy sites and represent them as faithfully as you can. Include a sentence or two about each |

| |of these elements explaining their significance. |

|3 |Basic Tenets Poem |

|(20 min) |View each of the religious PowerPoints and/or readings at the learning center. When you are finished, you will create a |

| |poem following the format below, repeating the sentences for each religion until you have one big “Religion Poem” |

| |“I am (religion name here)” |

| |“I believe _________________” |

| |“ I celebrate _______________” |

| |“I follow __________________” |

|4 |Religious Conflicts and Issues (3 Stations/3Case Studies) |

|(20 min) |At this learning center you will find various Case Studies on conflicts involving conflicts with a religious component. |

| |For each case study, do the following: |

| |Read the case study. |

| |Make a visual of the conflict by drawing a map of the area. Include the country/countries and relevant regions. |

| |Note religious groups involved |

| |Note historical background and key events of the conflict, especially those that involve religious groups. |

| |Answer the discussion questions included in the packet. |
