Remote education provision: information for parents January 2021

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education where national or local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home.

For details of what to expect where individual pupils are self-isolating, please see the final section of this page.

The remote curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home

A pupil’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home?

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

Remote teaching and study time each day

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

We expect that remote education (including live teaching sessions and independent work through the weekly home learning pack) will take pupils broadly the following number of hours each day:

|Key Stage 1* |EYFS – 1-2 hours independent work + 2 live sessions daily for 30 minutes |

| |Year 1/2 – 2 hours independent work + 2 live sessions daily for 30/45 minutes |

|Key Stage 2* |Year 3/4: 2 hours independent work + 2 live sessions daily for 1 hour |

| |Year 5/6: 2-3 hours independent work + 2 live sessions daily for 1 hour |

|*Please note this is a minimum offer and may be increased – for example, your child may also be invited to a live group or 1-1|

|session as well as the above ‘class offer’. |

Accessing remote education

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:[pic]

Engagement and feedback

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

[pic]

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

[pic]

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. Our approach to feeding back on pupil work is as follows:

Additional support for pupils with particular needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

Remote education for self-isolating pupils

Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will likely differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching pupils both at home and in school.

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?

Statement prepared by:

Mrs R Wallace, Headteacher

-----------------------

Pupils and teachers at Brabin’s Endowed have used the Seesaw App as an online learning platform since the first lockdown in March 2020.

In the first day or two, pupils will continue to use Seesaw for pupils to access home learning. This tool is also a way for pupils and parents to communicate with the class teacher. Work can also be shared through this platform.

We have continued to use our remote learning platform during the Autumn term 2020 in school so all pupils should be confident using it.

Teachers are available to provide technical support for parents and pupils.

A timetable has been created to support parents with the content of the learning planned for remote learning via the weekly home learning pack.

We will endeavour to stick as close as possible to our long-term curriculum plan in every class. We may swap units of work around that are more accessible for remote learning. However, we aim to continue our ‘in school’ curriculum coverage.

Lessons that are taking place for pupils in school will follow the same learning objectives to ensure all pupils are receiving the same offer. However, the task at home may be adjusted to compensate for the accessibility.

For example, angles work in maths would require all pupils to have a protractor and using a touch screen device to measure would extremely difficult. In this case we would swap the unit with a more accessible one and teach angles in class when we return.

Our online learning content is shared through Seesaw and the live lessons are through Microsoft Teams.

The use of the Seesaw App is beneficial as:

• It allows us to be secure, password protected and invitation only

• Maintains confidentiality

• Makes remote learning more accessible for all

• It is a familiar platform used by the children and teachers in school

In addition to the web-based offer, we will also provide families with a work pack that includes an exercise book, whiteboard and stationery if requested. This will help children improve the quality of their written tasks.

In the event a child does not have digital access at home, we endeavour to support families by offering a laptop or Ipad on a short-term loan.

For families who need support with internet connection we can provide the following:

• Support in applying for increased data allowances with the following companies: EE, O2, Sky Mobile, SMARTY, Tesco Mobile, Three, Virgin Mobile, Vodafone (DfE application via school

• Offer of support for 4g routers (DfE application via school)

We endeavour to support parents in gaining access to our online learning. If, we are still unable to support families in getting online, a paper-work pack could be made available. However, we are using this method as a last resort for the following reasons:

• Reduce transmission in pick-up and drop-off of paper packs

• We want all pupils to engage with our rich remote learning offer

Should you need any further support or assistance with internet or devices please call the school office on 01995 61596 or email: head@brabins.lancs.sch.uk

We are offering:

• Daily live sessions for all year groups

• Weekly home learning packs. Independent activities and task with clear written instructions and the opportunity to communicate with the class teacher. Work can be uploaded for marking and feedback from the class teacher.

• Where we can, we will supplement our instructions with links to other commercially available websites e.g., BBC Bitesize

• Access to other online learning platforms such as Oxford Owls for reading, TT Rockstars and My Maths for maths and Oak Academy.

• Weekly opportunities for physical activity. (Linked to the national curriculum objectivities).

• We will provide children with physical resources such as books and whiteboards to help them access the online learning if required.

We expect :

• Children to attend the live sessions

• Children to be provided with a calm and quiet space to access their remote learning

• Children to follow a daily routine

• Send work through Seesaw on a daily basis, if possible, so that teachers can give prompt feedback

• We will check to see if your child has completed their work via the Seesaw App

• We will monitor and record attendance of the live sessions

• If we are concerned about the quality or frequency of learning, we will adopt a weekly cycle of tracking and contact which will consist of the following:

Each week, by Day 3 at the latest: no engagement or poor engagement – Class teacher will make a phone call to parents to offer support

Each week, by Day 5 at the latest: no engagement or poor engagement – HT will follow up. This may include a phone call to parents or written communication

If we are unable to make contact, we may carry out a welfare visit to the address.

It is vital that we monitor children’s engagement for safeguarding pupils, and we are sure you will understand the necessity for our stringent procedures

• Via Seesaw, children will be given feedback on their work. This will be in written form or an oral voice note

• Work highlighted in pink means the answer is correct /work highlighted in green needs to be edited

For our school assessments we will be:

• Monitoring the consistency of remote learning

• Making daily assessments about how the children accessed the tasks. Teachers will make assessments against each daily learning objective. These assessments will kept and monitored to help us measure progress.

We hope that this will allow us to hit the ground running when we are able to return to the classroom. Should the national lockdown continue for an extended period of time, we will put in place a longer-term assessment programme. This will allow us to keep up to date and accurate assessments of our pupils’ attainment and maximise our teaching focus and support upon return to school.

Our SENCO is Mrs Wallace who is contactable on 01995 61595 or email head@brabins.lancs.sch.uk.

She will maintain oversight and liaise with teachers and parents to ensure that we are offering appropriate additional support for pupils with SEN. Each child will have a remote learning plan, which will detail the additional support that they have. This will be shared with parents verbally or in writing – whichever is most accessible.

We will apply the same processes for monitoring engagement and progress as for all children.

We will also continue to work with other agencies, such as health, educational psychologists to ensure that all necessary appointment and meetings take place in a ‘covid-secure’ way and that we continue to meet the ongoing needs of these pupils.

During the national lockdown, pupils who are isolating and not in school can carry on with their learning via Seesaw and attend the live sessions, health permitting. As we are following the same learning objectives online and in school, children should be able to pick up from where they left off.
