PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR, Cambium Learning Group, Longmont Colorado (Nov 08-present)

• Brought security practices into compliance with recommended best practices by implementing password expiration and compliance schemes. Part of this was the deployment of MyPassword, a self-service website designed to help users reset their own passwords, unlock their account, and to remind them what their password is. Also constructed simple, How-To videos on how to use MyPassword. This made for a safer and more productive environment for all.

• Setup and deployed WSUS 3.2 for patch management purposes. Also monitored same, setup system for approval of patches, and notifications when patching would take place. The end result was to cut down on Virus infections, and improved the quality of the systems.

• Deployed Sophos AntiVirus Enterprise for our domain and several other domains in the forest. Later, following a merger, I migrated the Longmont and Natick domains from Sophos to McAfee. This involved working in management console to write policies for our domains, ensure machines were correctly assigned, and went so far as to write policies so that updates happened not only at the default of 5 PM, but upon logon. This practice helped cut down on virus infections drastically.

• Implemented and deployed the ChangeGear change management software for use by the IT department in keeping track of tickets and projects. This helped ensure user issues were being resolved in a timely manner, and had the side effect of building a database from which others could draw to find solutions that worked.

• Worked with Mac users in resolution of speed and connection issues to Windows servers. Some of this was because Microsoft hadn’t really done much with AppleTalk and such in years, and in addition to fixing a number of small configuration issues, we also deployed ExtremeZ-IP that increased Mac user productivity.

• Deployed EZ-GPO to handle off hours power for workstations throughout the domain. Deployment resulted in a $1000.00 a month saving on power.

• Virtualized the aging web servers and then upgraded them to Windows 2003 server.

• Deployed Windows 2008 servers to include Hyper-V, adding a new capabilities to the company’s virtualization infrastructure

• Reconfigured Exchange 2003 servers, Domain Controllers, and Cisco routers as part of a merger with Voyager Learning Inc.

• Deployed Network and System monitors to help keep tabs of what was going on within the infrastructure. This included the construction of cross-domain permissions, writing of procedures, and configuration of Cisco routers and VPN devices.

• Wrote scripts that helped solve a number of historical issues that helped solve. Before, these problems made security and just everyday jobs a nightmare. Scripts eliminated the need for human intervention by automating process the Sys Admin had to do manually.

• Deployed Juniper SSG Routers/Firewalls to increase the Internet security of the company.

• Negotiated contracts for cabling, services, and servers.

• Planned and implemented upgrade of hardware on hosted machines, and planned and migrated mission critical applications to new hardware. This involved working with several different departments, and third party vendors.

• Implemented domain wide Group Policies to set certain settings to workstations across the domain to include IE7 settings, power settings, patch management, and local McAfee updates.

• Upon the company becoming a publicly traded entity, worked closely with SOX auditors to make the company compliant. This involved aggressive security scans, cleanup of Active Directory and local user accounts, maintaining logs, and ticket systems. End result was a more secure network, and better SOX reports.
