Easter Sunday
Worship Bulletin
April 12, 2009
Westminster Presbyterian Church extends an enthusiastic welcome, in Christ’s name,
to all who would worship here or join us in fellowship.
We affirm that there can be no exclusion within the body of Christ.
We invite all children of God to join us as disciples of Christ
and participate fully in the life of our congregation.

Welcome to Westminster
Whether you are worshiping at Westminster for the first time or returning for a visit, the pastors and members sincerely welcome you in the name of Christ. Following our worship service, we invite you to meet an Ambassador at the back of the sanctuary. We have a gift for you, and would like to share information regarding our many programs for children, youth and adults. An Ambassador can guide you to the hospitality area to enjoy fellowship or lead you on a tour of the church. We hope you will make Westminster your church home and discover ways to grow in faith.
Children are welcome in worship! Westminster’s Kids’ Notes and worship bags are available each Sunday from the ushers. Kids’ Notes, a weekly companion to Westminster’s morning worship, emphasizes listening and seeing during worship. The bags include storybooks for children of all ages, coloring paper and crayons, a children’s bulletin for those age three to six, and bookmarks for hymns and Scripture.
Worship Aids - Large print Presbyterian Hymnals and hearing devices may be obtained from an usher. If you experience a problem with a hearing device, ask an usher for a new one.
Audio tapes and DVD’s of recent Westminster worship services are available. Please use the sign-out sheet when you borrow them from the front desk. Printed sermons are available on the literature tables the following week and on our website at .
The Lord’s Supper is celebrated the first Sunday of every month at both services.
Baptisms - If you wish to schedule a baptism, please contact Suzie Hurlock (302) 654-5214, ext. 127.
The flowers in the sanctuary today are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Jack Foster and Charles Pfleegor from Anne Foster and Chip Pfleegor.
Sanctuary Flowers - Consider giving the sanctuary flowers for Sunday worship. Your gift of God’s natural beauty to remember or honor loved ones, or to celebrate an event, expresses praise and thanksgiving to God. Please contact Linda Watson during business hours at 302-571-6719or lwatson@.
Are you wearing a nametag? It is always a friendly gesture to do so here at Westminster. Whether you are a longtime member or new to the church, wearing a nametag allows others the opportunity to meet you, greet you by name, and become more familiar with others at church. Nametags and markers are available in baskets at all major entrances. Do not assume everyone knows who you are. Extend hospitality, kindness and friendship by wearing a nametag every Sunday.
The deadline for the Sunday bulletin and the “Westminster Weekly Word” is Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.
Send announcements and articles for any of the publications to news@.

You know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep.
For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Preparation for Worship
Astounding God, very early on that first day of the week you caught chaos unawares; planting grace in a garden, setting love loose on creation, flinging joy into the air. Jesus, Sun of Justice, very early on that first day you confounded death, leaving it alone in the grave and you opened the gates of the kingdom, so all could follow you into life. Scarred Spirit, very early on this first day, while we were washing sleep from our eyes and trying to make sense of our lives, you sang glad songs to us, rolling away fears from our hearts so that we can see the Risen Lord. (Thom M. Shuman)

(Organ) Fanfare in D major Jacques Lemmens
(Brass & Organ) Music for the Royal Fireworks: Overture G. F. Handel
Call to Worship
Resurrection begins with the cry of grief,
then moves to the confusion of an empty tomb.
A familiar voice calls out and the chains of death are broken.
Could it be that Christ is alive?
Introit and Hymn arr. John Ness Beck
Choir Why weepest thou? Whom seekest thou?
He is not here, for He is risen! Alleluia.
(Organ/brass interlude)
*Congregation Christ the Lord is ris’n today, Alleluia!
All creation join to say; Alleluia!
Raise your joys and triumphs high; Alleluia!
Sing, we heav’ns, and earth reply, Alleluia!
Love’s redeeming work is done. Alleluia!
Fought the fight, the battle won. Alleluia!
Death in vain forbids Him rise; Alleluia!
Christ has opened Paradise. Alleluia!
Lives again our glorious King: Alleluia!
Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!
Once He died our souls to save; Alleluia!
Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia!
Soar we now where Christ hath led, Alleluia!
Following our exalted Head; Alleluia!
Made like Him, like Him we rise, Alleluia!
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies. Alleluia!
Call to Prayer
If Christ is alive, despair is no longer the final word.
If Christ is alive, then we too, may have eternal life.
Let everyone turn from the darkness and embrace the light!
Christ is risen! HE IS RISEN INDEED!
At the asterisk (*) the congregation stands (as you are able). Passages in bold print may be said by all.
Prayer of Praise
God of the empty tomb,
we come to this joyful day with our eyes focused on the lilies.
Guide our timid eyes to the cross.
Remind us again of the tomb;
filled and now empty.
Remind us again of Mary’s tears;
of sorrow, but now joy.
Remind us again of Peter’s words;
denial and now proclaiming.
God of the empty tomb, grant us the grace to accept
both the cost and the joy of following you.
In the name of the risen Christ, we pray. Amen. (Katherine Hawker)
Passing of the Peace
Anthem “On This Day of Glory” Robert Leaf
On this day of glory, day full of joy,
we sing to the Lord a mighty hymn of praise.
On this day of triumph, day full of grace,
sing praise to the risen Lord.
This the day! Christ arose! Gloria!
Sound the trumpets, join the singing.
This the day our Christ arose!
Now, let sounds of vict’ry ring thru the air.
All nations must hear the joyful news we bring!
From each mountain top proclaim to the world:
The vict’ry of life is won!

*Affirmation of Faith
We trust in Jesus Christ, God with us in human flesh,
who proclaimed the reign of God.
He preached good news to the poor and release to the captives;
He healed the sick and ate with outcasts;
He forgave sinners and called all people to repent and believe.
Condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified.
But God raised him from the dead,
vindicating his life, breaking the power of sin and evil,
and delivering us from death to eternal life. A Brief Statement of Faith, PCUSA
Offertory Anthem “Let the Bright Seraphim” Malcolm Archer
Let the bright seraphim in burning row,
their loud uplifted angel trumpets blow.
Ring out, ye crystal spheres,
and bless our human ears;
and let your silver chime
move in melodious time.
If ye have no power to touch our senses so,
let the bass of heaven’s mighty organ blow!
And with the cherubim, and nine-fold harmony,
Heav’nly Host make up the full consort of the’angelic symphony.
And above him stood the seraphim,
one came unto the other and said;
Christ is risen! Halleluia!
Prayers of the People
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
*Hymn No. 119 “The Strife Is O’er” victory
arr. Paul Lindsley Thomas
*Benediction
*Choral Postlude “Hallelujah” (from Messiah) G. F. Handel
Hallelujah! for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. The kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of His Christ: and He shall reign for ever and ever. King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, Hallelujah!

Congregational Care and Prayer
Please remember in your prayers:
❖ Those recently hospitalized include Charles Reeder, D. Pauline Best, Joan Dugdale, Forrest Guth and Barbara Clough.
❖ Westminster’s homebound family who can no longer attend worship with us. Send a card, say a prayer, visit! This week we ask you to remember Betty Kelley, Apartment 134 and Rebecca Warner, AL-212, Forwood Manor, 1912 Marsh Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.
Our brothers and sisters in global mission: Sue Makin, MD, Malawi; Delle McCormick, Southwest Border; Roger and Gloria Marriott, Dennis and Maribel Smith and the Mam Presbytery, Guatamala; Timothee Kalonji Matadi, Cecilé de Sweemer, MD, Pastor Jean-Marc Katujudi Nkuna and members of the Kamulumba-Ditalala Parish, Congo; Rev. Dr. Lyle and Terry Dykstra, PCUSA Mission Volunteers, Presbyterian University, Kenya. They are praying for us; let us also pray for them.
Pray for those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan often seem very far away and it is easy to forget that Americans, Iraqis, Afghans and coalition forces continue to die. As Christians, we are called to pray for an end to violence, and for the spreading of God’s kingdom of peace and justice. It is also important for us to remember in prayer the families who grieve the loss of their loved ones who have died in these wars. The number of Americans serving in our Armed Forces who have died in these two wars is 4,266(as of April 9.) The number of Iraqis and Afghans who have been killed is many times greater, but no agreed upon number exists. Those Americans who have died most recently are:
Specialist Adam M. Kuligowski, age 21, of Arlington, Virginia, died April 6
Specialist Israel Candelaria Mejias, age 28, of San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, died April 5
Staff Sergeant Phillip A. Myers, age 30, of Hopewell, Virginia, died April 4
Sergeant Daniel J. Beard, age 24, of Buffalo, New York, died April 3
Lance Corporal Stephen F. Dearmon, age 21, of Crossville, Tennessee, died April 3
Sergeant Devin C. Poche, age 25, of Jacksonville, North Carolina, died March 31
Lance Corporal Nelson M. Lantigua, age 20, of Miami, Florida, died March 31
Pray for those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. If there is someone in your family who is serving in Iraq or Afghanistan please call or email Maureen Ogden (302-654-5214 ext. 126 or maureen@) with his or her name so that we can put the name on a prayer list.
Westminster’s Covenant Prayer Group is committed to praying weekly for specific needs of the faith community. Anyone with prayer requests may leave a confidential message on 302-654-5848, ext. 335, or fill out a prayer request card (in the pew pocket) and place it in the offering plate.
A Centering Prayer time occurs every Thursday at noon in the Ruth Christie Room. Anyone is welcome to participate. Basically, those who come spend thirty minutes in silence. Sometimes we have sacred music playing in the background. Silence allows us time and space to empty our minds, quiet our brains’ chatter, and be still and attentive to God.
If you have come to worship with a heavy heart – worried or confused, anxious or grieving, hurting or fearful about something in your life – a Stephen Minister is available to meet with you following the service and to offer compassionate support. Just go to the piano in the sanctuary at the conclusion of the service, and someone with a Stephen Minister nametag will be there to speak with you.
Stephen Minister Meeting. Thursday, April 16, 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church. The program: Five Wishes – A New Approach to Living Wills. Please join us for this program at 6:45 p.m. Contact Person: Pam Bailey 484-508-8186 or pammie.bailey@.
Easter Activities
Westminster’s Easter Breakfast – Join Westminster friends for breakfast in Community Hall today before or after worship, from 8:00 – 11:00 a.m. Menu will include egg casserole, ham, cheese grits, fresh fruit, dry cereal, and cinnamon rolls. Cost is $5 for adults (15 yr. and older), $3.00 for children (6-14 yr.) and $1.00 (5 yr. and younger).
Easter Egg Hunt Today. Please join us today between services for the annual Easter Egg Hunt! All Westminster children (second grade and under) are invited to participate in this fun-filled tradition. We hunt eggs each year because they remind us of God’s Easter surprise to the women who went to the tomb and found it empty! Join us in Classroom 6 at 10:10 a.m. We’ll make a ‘basket’ and then look for surprises outside.
News To Note
Expression of Gratitude from former pastor, Jon Walton. “I want to thank everyone at Westminster who has taken the time to write a note or call or express their concern for me during these recent weeks of my recovery from open heart surgery. I am happy to say that the surgery was a success and I am well on my way back to strength. I will be preaching at the morning services on Easter at First Presbyterian in New York, and this will mark my first Sunday back since February 8th. I am especially grateful to Greg and Camilla Jones who came to New York on the day of my surgery, offered prayer, and stood in waiting with my family as I underwent my aortic valve replacement. I continue to be strengthened by the kind wishes and support of so many of you who have been in touch with me. Grace and peace to you all.” Jon Walton
Yoga classes are held in Rodney Chapel each week Thursdays (5:30 – 6:40 p.m.) and Saturdays (10 – 11 a.m.) Yoga benefits the body, mind, and spirit. Wear comfortable clothing, bring a mat, and join us. Suggested donation is $10 to cover costs of instructor and building use, but pay as you are able. Thursday night yoga will resume on April 23.
Samaritans once again need furniture, especially beds. We have outstanding requests from people in need of furniture. If you have anything you can donate please call John Bowman at 984-1181 or email him at johnrbowman@.
Join the Phix-It Corps! Twice a month a dedicated group of volunteers meet at the Church to help “Phix” things. This group is a major reason the Church property is so well maintained. We rely on them to attend to all those small items that left alone can become big headaches. The jobs vary from light to heavy and everything in between. The ministry is one of fellowship, fun and accomplishment. Please consider joining this small group on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month at 8:30 am. If you have any questions, please contact Jeff Lippincott at home 302-655-9080, on his cell 302-494-2830, or by email at maddogdoc25@.
Close Knit. Be a part of our knitting fellowship at church to knit prayer shawls for members of our congregation and wool helmet liners for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our soldiers need these liners to make the helmets absorbent and more comfortable. Each knitter provides his/her own materials. See these websites: ( and helmetliner). We will provide help for beginner knitters! Join us from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Ruth Christie Room on the 1st and 3rd Mondays through May. Please call Pam Mann (302-234-6644,) Carol Shelly (302-478-3992) or Ellen Slade (302-654-3645) for additional information.

Off to New Orleans! Westminster's 9th trip to Rebuild Hope in New Orleans (RHINO) departs tomorrow. Please keep these participants in your prayers as they build homes in Ferry Place, New Orleans this week: Jerry and Sue Spilecki, Betty and Jac Crowell, Susan Heinsohn, Kris and Neely Qualls, Bob, Linda and Josh Cox and Mary Beth Davis.
April Is Earth Month at WPC. Earth Day is April 22, and in light of that the Urban Mission focus for April is on the environment, specifically on our most precious resource – water. Only three tenths of one percent of the water on earth is suitable for human use, and that small amount is jeopardized by climate change, waste and pollution. Join us on April 19th (10 pm, classroom 5) when environmentalist and former DNREC head Nick DiPasquale will give us an overview of water issues in Delaware. Then, come to Grace Hall on Friday evening April 24, at 7 pm to see the award winning film “FLOW” – which describes the rapidly growing water crisis on both a human and a global scale and addresses the difficult question: “Can anyone really own water?”
Dining Out For Life. On Thursday, April 30, 2008, AIDS Delaware is having its annual Dining Out for Life event. As we have done the past ten years, we extend a special invitation for you to participate in this event at Buckley’s Tavern, 6:30 p.m. Each participating restaurant will donate 33% of their total food profits from their April 30th receipts to AIDS Delaware! The funds support AIDS Delaware’s case management services, education and outreach programs, counseling and testing initiatives, and its Food Closet. This is a fun and easy way to support AIDS Delaware and also have a nice fellowship dinner. Please let José Varela know if you are able to attend by Tuesday, April 21 in order to make the appropriate reservation for our group. We hope you can come and join us. You may call José at 302-652-6776, or email josecaleno@.
Young Family Fellowship
Join the Young Family Fellowship/Parents Of Loved Ones (POLO) group on Sunday, April 26, at 12:15 pm to ride the Wilmington & Western Railroad. This 1 1/2 hour long trip starts at 12:30 pm and is on the Mount Cuba line. The cost is $10 per adult, $8 for children ages 2-12, and $9 for seniors. If you would like to attend, please contact Kelly McCulloch at 302-384-6594 or via e-mail at ksmcculloch@.
Dear Friends of West Church,
West Presbyterian Church will be closing its doors for the last time on Wednesday April, 29, 2009. This is a sad time for us, but it is also a joyful one as we are confident that we have done what God has called us to do and have completed our mission. We have been a committed people and have been good stewards of what we have been given.
The congregation has chosen to celebrate and honor our faithful one hundred and forty years of Mission and Ministry by having a worship service of music and scripture led by former pastors of West Church. We hope you will plan to join us in our Service of Celebration on Sunday, April 19 at 3:00 p.m. and will share this information with anyone whom you feel may want to attend.
“For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

Mission Focus on Housing Issues in May
The Urban Mission Committee May emphasis will be on local housing issues. Highlighting this will be three speakers at the Sunday Christian Education hour.
May 3: Mr. Kevin Smith, Executive Director, Habitat for Humanity NCC will give us an update on current projects for providing low income housing.
May 10: Mr. Anas Ben Addi, Director of the Delaware State Housing Authority will speak about this vital state program that addresses Delaware’s affordable housing needs.
May 17: Jan Patrick, Realtor, will speak on “Understanding the Challenge of Today’s Housing Market.” Highlights include what it will take to get out of the current situation and also how the “Stimulus Bill” affects us.
Also in May will be a “parade of posters” of local non-profit housing corporations and “build day” with Habitat for Humanity is planned.
