A Washington Landmark, The Landing was built in 1855 by C.H. Kahmann and

was originally called The Pacific House, a name derived from the new railroad line. It

was built to accommodate the influx of people coming into the area due to the railroad.

It seems Kahmann was something of a real estate ¡°speculator¡± and invested in a lot of

property along Elm, Cedar, and Front Streets. He sold the property within two years

at the high of the market.

Over the years, the building has always housed a Hotel/Saloon. In the first half

of the twentieth century the place gained a rather ¡°blue¡± reputation as some of the old

timers insisted that a brothel was operated here. Certainly during the time the railroad

often attracted a number of seedy characters always coming and going. Traveling salesman would often stay here.

For many years, the Saloon was operated by Fred Ruether who was to become the

mayor of Washington. The Hotel/Saloon changed hands several times taking on a various name changes such as The Peoples Hotel, Derringers, and Diamond Jim¡¯s Disco.

The building sat vacant in the late 1970¡¯s and early 1980¡¯s until visionary Gary

Mense, The Landing founder, was riding his bike past an auction on the Courthouse steps. He knew the building well

and decided to purchase the three-story building for $55,000. In 1983 Gary opened up Mense¡¯s Landing and soon it

was the most popular bar in Franklin County. Gary had great vision and expanded in many areas until he sold the business to Rick and Karen Marquart in 2002. Marquart also had unique vision and has continued to expand the property

purchasing the surrounding buildings for the patio expansion. Marquart said, ¡°I love this place and I will continue to

reinvest the profits into making The Landing the greatest place in the area.¡± ¡°I do this so the future owner will continue to operate this Washington Landmark for many years to come.¡±
