[Date][Name Name] MP (If a Minister, The Honourable Name Name MP)Member for [Electorate][Address]Dear [first name]Older Australians are the most vulnerable to the potentially deadly coronavirus and that means our proud and passionate aged care workers have been, and remain, on the front line in the battle to protect our treasured elders. The Federal Government has acknowledged that by providing a bonus payment to our valued workers. The Government said – in a letter from the Aged Care Minister in late March - that residential care workers would be paid up to $800 after tax, while home care workers would be paid up to $600 after tax. Now, as the payments are about to start, the rules have changed, with all payments subject to tax. In practice, this sees workers out of pocket by up to $200 or more, with estimates of up to $50 million not flowing to aged care workers.Aged care staff are a critical workforce that has delivered exceptional care while under great pressure and this is extremely disappointing for them.We call on you as our local Member to help honour this promise to aged care workers, by working to avoid the taxing of this payment. We are also urging you to ask the Government to reconsider its decision to exclude some residential aged care staff from the retention bonus. All staff are responsible and essential to the delivery of safe and effective aged care in the context of COVID-19.Providing the retention bonus to some staff and not to others devalues their dedicated work and has been a source of significant anger and distress among employees.Yours faithfully[Signatory] ................
