PRESIDENT’S REPORT
The 2007/08 SA Athletic League season continued the momentum of the development of our sport in recent years. This is especially pleasing given the challenges faced by the League over the last few years, both unique to and is shared by other not for profit sports organisations.
As I made note of at the annual dinner, over the 5 years that it has taken the League to pay the Mort Daly Running Foundation loan, prizemoney across our carnivals has increased by 28%. At the same time, the League has returned to a position of making a healthy profit on each season. These are outstanding achievement for an organisation like ours, particularly at a time when sports organisations must address ever increasing demands. It should be remembered that, tasked with the commitment to pay substantial yearly instalments on the MDRF loan, the demands on the League have been greater than most. The loan is now payed and the achievement should not go un-noticed. The League owes a debt of gratitude to the work of Colin Rowston and Cathy Thurston especially, and to the commitment of Amin Chehade and Michelle Burckhardt for returning the League to the financial position it is now in.
The gains of the last 5 years can be consolidated with a renewed focus on recruitment to the sport. In this regard, a number of initiatives for the 2008/09 season are already being planned and I look forward to seeing the League take advantage of them.
On another positive note, it was terrific to see our flagship event, the Bay Sheffield, develop further as a feature of the season and the League should be proud of it. The quality, professionalism and integrity of the event improves each year. The Bay Sheffield is now back to being the financial support to the League that it should be.
My personal thanks to the League Committee for another efficient year. An involvement is usually a thankless task and the 7.15am meetings don't help. They are however, made more tolerable by a committee that has a good vibrancy about it.
To the officials, who once again maintained the standard of excellence that each carnival enjoys, my sincere thanks. The sense of community that exists within our sport is in no small part due to the officials who present at each meeting. I hope the season was an enjoyable one for them.
I take this opportunity to formally recognise the contribution to the sport made by Brian Hart. 30 years as a starter with the League is an outstanding record on its own. What makes it an enduring one, is the number of people over the course of those 30 years who would call Brian a mate and who would readily say that their experience with the League is richer for having met him. I will proudly count myself among them.
Enjoy your winters.
Brendan Golden

TREASURER’S REPORT
It had been 6 years since I last the opportunity to report to you on the financial results of the League, and it is with much pleasure that I report that the operations of the League resulted in a surplus of $14,017.
Our nominations were down from last year as you can see from the statistics provided by the Executive Officer’s report but I am pleased to advise that the profit from the race meetings increased by $11,508 and returned a profit of $40,892, which greatly assisted in the overall results for the year. Other income increased by $1,525.
As you can see from the Operating Statement the administration expenses were $4,585 less than last year mainly due to not spending any amount on new equipment which was $2,502 last year, and other sundry item which were lower than last year.
The Honoraria was increased this year by $3,230 which included an invitation to the Presentation dinner and membership of the League for all track officials.
Office salaries increased by $4,132, part of which was the additional salary paid the Cheryl Zeuner prior to Michelle Burckhardt taking maternity leave.
The overall result this year had meant that we were able to discharge the Mort Daly Running Foundation loan together with interest, which has been ably reported on by the President, and returned us to a positive Member’s Accumulated Fund of $2,757.
It is with great anticipation that we are on the right track again, and hope that we never get into a negative position again.
I cannot finish my report without thanking all of the people who have made contributions during the year to cover the costs of sashes and trophies, and in particular to Alby Donnelly, Dr.Peter Noblet AM., Jim Bradley and to all of those athletes who have contributed either directly to the League or to the various Clubs.
My final thanks must go to Michelle Burckhardt and Cheryl Zeuner for their assistance and co-operation during the year and to the President Brendan Golden and Senior Vice President Colin Rowston who do so much work for the League without which the League would just not operate.

My procedure included examination on a test basis of evidence supporting the amounts and other disclosures in the financial statements and the evaluation of accounting policies. Program
The program for the season went well even though numbers were down. Special thanks go the organisers at Reynella Athletic Club, Flinders Athletic Club, Brighton/Marion Athletic Club, Camden Athletic Club, Tea Tree Gully Athletic Club, Flagstaff Hill Athletic Club and McKinnon Parade Athletic Club for holding successful events this season.
Our thanks also go to Plympton Sport and Recreation Club for their support and the Mort Daly Running Foundation for their valuable ongoing support to the League.
Our country carnivals were again successful events this season. Special thanks to the Whyalla Gift Committee for their tireless efforts, the Mt Gambier Gift Committee for their hard work and the Loxton Gift Committee including Geoff Strutton for providing an extremely popular carnival and weekend away.
To all the hosts, congratulations for our events for 2007/2008 season and hope all athletes enjoyed the season.
As I am acting in this role until Michelle returns, I would like to say a special thank you to Michelle Burckhardt for her assistance and advice in what has been a real eye-opener re working behind the scenes and not just competing.
My thanks to Colin Rowston, Brendan Golden, Ken Potts and the committee for their help and assistance during the season.
A special thank you to the officials who turn up every carnival regardless of conditions and do such a grand job.
Thanks also to Terry McAuliffe, Mark Faulkner, Robbie Ziersch, Phil Daws, Brian Hart, Brenda Pearl and Ray Mules for helping throughout the year. To all those running stables who helped transporting the trailer and coaches and athletes who carried out their set-up duties at carnivals.
I am enjoying working in this role temporarily and look forward to the coming season, both in my present capacity (until Michelle returns) and as a competing athlete.

Acting Executive Officer
PROGRAMMING REPORT
The 2007/08 SA Athletic League season was full of highlights and, from a programming point of view, signalled a great deal of stability which was pleasing to see. Total prizemoney offered throughout the season was $131,550.
The following is a summary of the 15 meetings that were conducted:
HALLETT COVE – 14 October 2007
The season’s opening race meeting was once again held at Hallett Cove, with the southern suburbs football oval providing a terrific setting to kick off the summer. Hallett Cove winners have tended to become strong performers right throughout the course of the following season, with Lyall Weir (100m Open), Leanne Hodge (100m Women), Bryce Watkins (1000m Open) and Richard McMahon (400m Novice) continuing the trend in 2007. We look forward to maintaining this event on the calendar.
REYNELLA – 26 October 2007
The Reynella Gift Carnival was held at night in 2007 for the first time in many years. Duncan Tippins made an instant impact on the season by winning the 120m Open feature sprint and Leanne Hodge continued her dominating early season form in the Women’s Gift. Despite the risk of having a night meeting so early in the season, the still conditions in 2007 provided a superb setting for runners and spectators. An 800m race for women was added to the program last season and was well supported. We look forward to continuing the tradition of this meeting next season, with the date for the Reynella Gift Carnival to be late in November.
FLINDERS – 11 November 2007
With the Flinders Athletics Club being one of the biggest clubs in the state, it is fantastic that they have been able to build up a tradition for their own race meeting in the last few years. The 2007 event saw Emily Hyde take out the main race of the day, the Women’s 800m, over her sister Lauren. The final provided a remarkable moment in the history of the Flinders Athletics Club, with all eight finalists being trained by Flinders coaches Toby Scherier and Shane Thiele. The Hyde family also tasted success earlier in the day, with Peter Hyde, the brother of Emily and Lauren, easily winning the 800m Under 20s final. On a day which saw many backmarkers successful, 2003 Bay Sheffield champion Todd Bateman had a highly impressive victory in the 200m Open Bill Ross Memorial. This meeting is set to return next season in early November.
WHYALLA – 17 November 2007
The League is fortunate to have the Whyalla Gift Carnival back on our calendar, thanks to the hard work of Jim Hewitson and Events Whyalla. In 2007, the running was of a high standard with some classy performances including victories from former Bay Sheffield champs Clay Watkins and Courtney Lyas as well as eventual Athlete of the Season Brian Golden. Distance athletes are extremely well catered for at Whyalla, with 800m, 1600m and 5km events on the program. The combination of the running with a Food and Wine Festival is a terrific concept, although the timing of the 2007 event was not ideal as it clashed with other local sports and Christmas parties which would have kept the crowd down. To counteract this, the date for the 2008 Whyalla Gift Carnival has been shifted to early November. With nominations increasing in 2007 compared to 2006, we look forward to continued support from athletes for this important meet which last season offered prizemoney of $17,000.
MT GAMBIER – 1 December 2007
A very important lead up to the Bay Sheffield Carnival is the popular Mt Gambier Gift Carnival, with the winners usually starting as favourites for their respective races on December 27 and 28. The 2007 Mt Gambier Gift Carnival was dominated by Paul Young’s runners, with five sashes going to the club. These victories included the feature 70m and 120m Open sprints, taken out by Dale Woodhams, and the 120m Women’s Gift, won by Abbey Dunn. Not only does the timing and location of this event allow Victorians to compete under SA Athletic League rules before the Bay Sheffield Carnival, the track is always prepared spectacularly and this has gained a tremendous reputation Australia-wide. Next season this meeting will be held on the last weekend in November, with the new SA Athletic League Management Committee to consider if the usual Bay Sheffield non-penalty clause is to remain.
COLLEY RESERVE – 9 December 2007
Due to the generosity of the Mort Daly Running Foundation, the prizemoney for the Pre-Bay Sheffield Carnival doubled in 2007. While the two feature sprints were worth a sizeable $1000 each, it was decided to share the cash around equally elsewhere, with all other races worth $500. This proved a popular innovation and was appreciated by all competitors. The winner of the Mort Daly Gift was evergreen sprinter Duncan Tippins who took out the race in devastating fashion. The main women’s race for the day was over 70 metres, with promising 18 year old Flinders athlete Emma Freer showing her class in crossing the line first with plenty in hand. This meet is always a great dress rehearsal for our main event at the end of the month and it is highly appropriate that the Mort Daly Running Foundation is the sole sponsor for that day, as we are able to recognise its magnificent contribution to the sport.
PLYMPTON – 16 December 2007
The last raceday before the Bay Sheffield Carnival was once again held at Plympton, with the races remaining to provide an excellent form guide for the following event at Colley Reserve. Eventual Bay Sheffield placegetter, Alexander Bubner was highly impressive as he flew home off his backmark to take out the Plympton Gift over 120 metres. Lynette Mattingly showed a sign of things to come in clearly winning the Plympton Women’s Gift. While this venue has a great deal of tradition associated with it, plans for the last meeting before the Bay Sheffield Carnival next season revolve around Glenelg Oval which will involve some exciting initiatives that will enhance the sport.
BAY SHEFFIELD – 27/28 December 2007
The 121st Coopers Bay Sheffield saw another new chapter in South Australia’s richest and most famous footrace, with South Australian athlete Damian Tohl becoming the first son of a Bay Sheffield winner to take out the famous footrace after his coach and father Anthony had previously won the race in 1981. The Pier One Bar Bay Sheffield Women’s Gift saw another history-making feat, with Lynette Mattingly (nee Viney) becoming the first-ever dual winner of the race after also taking home the 1998 sash. The results for the entire Carnival were evenly spread among different coaches and among runners from different states, with numerous highlights including Olympian Tamsyn Lewis’ victory in the 550m Women’s final, Dale Engler and Toby Medlin providing the first-ever dead head in the Selected Backmarkers Mile and the Mark Hipworth trained Michael Marantelli winning the Backmarkers Mile. Marantelli was awarded the Frank McHugh trophy after also competing in the 800m Open (2nd) and 550m Open (4th) finals. Races for other athletics organisations were won by Ben Hall (Elite Athletes with a Disability), Bethany Orlando (Athletics SA), Chris Johns (Masters) and David Trembath (Masters). The 2007 Bay Sheffield Carnival also saw a number of highly successful innovations, including the use of a giant video screen, the introduction of a Bay Sheffield Calcutta open to the general public and the announcement of 12 inductees into the inaugural Bay Sheffield Hall of Fame.
GLENELG – 18 January 2008
2007 Camden Classic winner, Wallace Long-Scafidi bounced back to the winner’s list with a classy performance to take out the Phil McMahon Real Estate Glenelg Gift at Challenge Recruitment Oval for the first event of 2008. Kim Letton started her run of victories in the second half of the season as she held off all challengers to take home the Glenelg Women’s Gift sash over 120 metres. One of the highlights of the night, as well as the season, was the victory of long-time League supporter and current Vice-Patron Peter Noblet in the 1600m race for Over 35 runners. Competing in his fourth season after taking up the sport at the age of 58, he utilised his frontmark to win his first-ever sash. We look forward to utilising this excellent venue at a prominent stage of the League’s season in the future.
MARION – 26 January 2008
The move of the Australia Day Carnival from Edwardstown to Marion proved a success and there were some excellent performances, including Lyall Weir’s win in the 120m Gift, Lauren Murray’s first victory in the 120m Women’s Gift and Courtney Evans’ effort to take out the women’s race over 300m. With the top efforts of the Marion Sports Club, this event looks set to remain on Australia Day for many more seasons.
CAMDEN CLASSIC – 3 February 2008
273 nominations were received for the 2008 City of West Torrens Camden Classic Carnival, the highest amount in its 29 year history. Despite this significant fact, the event will be remembered for one particular performance, that being Duncan Tippins’ win the Messenger Community Newspapers 400m Camden Classic. His effort to circle the field and take the lead with 180 metres to go despite starting as backmarker was amazing and will go down as one of the best ever runs seen in the SA Athletic League. Courtney Evans also produced a career-best performance to put her name down in the history books as a Camden Women’s Classic winner. Some special plans are being made to celebrate the event’s 30th birthday next season thanks to the outstanding support of the City of West Torrens.
TEA TREE GULLY – 17 February 2008
The feature sprint races at the 2008 Tea Tree Gully Carnival demonstrated the SA Athletic League’s Mission Statement that it “promotes athletics as an enjoyable, healthy sport for people of all categories and abilities." 33-year-old Aaron Harrison sprinted confidently to win the 70m Open final, while 21-year-old Shanan McCarthur captured a well deserved victory in the 200m Open race. 22-year-old Leanne Hodge continued her magnificent season to record another victory in the 70m Women’s race and, at the other end of the spectrum, 41-year-old Jackie Chehade scored her first victory in seven years in the Women’s 200m final. This meet, which serves an important purpose in providing an athletics raceday in the northern suburbs, will be held under lights next season on a Saturday night.
LOXTON – 23 February 2008
25-year-old Ben Koschade lived up to his promise of a big Gift win in a thrilling final of the 2008 Nippys Loxton Gift. SA Athletic League President Brendan Golden, who coached the winner of the Gift, had more than Koschade’s victory to smile about, as his own personal efforts were rewarded with a win in the 300 metre Over 35s final and his brother Brian putting in another strong performance to take home the 300m Open sash. The other 300 metre race, the BP Fruit 300m Women’s Loxton Classic was won by last year’s placegetter Claire Ashman, with the final scarred with a spectacular fall of one of the favourites, Lucy Buckley, down the back straight. Australia’s richest race over 1000 metres was claimed by Bay Sheffield Selected mile winner Toby Medlin in a dominating performance. The event was a spectacular success, with Adelaide’s Clipsal 500 and Loxton’s unusual cool windy conditions not deterring a large contingent of local spectators to once again be on hand to see SA Athletic League action at its best. We hope the Nippys Loxton Gift Carnival can continue for many years to come as it has quickly become one of the most popular events in the country.
FLAGSTAFF – 29 February 2008
David Palmer became the first ever back to back winner of the Flagstaff Hill Gift in what was the 3rd time he has taken out SA’s final 120m Gift before the Easter Stawell Gift. Another evergreen veteran, Geoff Troiano, finished on top of the dais in the 550m Open John Dawkins Memorial after a gutsy front running display. The women’s races were won by Kim Letton (120m) and Zoe Kennedy (400m). On an evening which will be remembered for its chilly conditions, those in attendance will also remember a significant moment in the sport, with SA Athletic League Life Member Brian Hart presented with a sash acknowledging his 30 years of starting. John LeRay and his team are looking at keeping a similar format for next season, with the request of an additional veteran’s long sprint race to be granted.
PULTENEY – 16 March 2008
With the hot weather policy implemented for the first time in the season, talented middle distance athlete Christopher Ross was a clear victor of the last feature race for the 2007/08 SA Athletic League season, the 1600m Open Thomas Wright Memorial. The race meeting saw some tremendous performances, including a win from scratch in the 200m Over 35s final by new veteran David Palmer and a courageous victory by Lucy Buckley in the 200m Women’s race after overcoming leg injuries and concussion from a race fall at the Loxton Gift Carnival. Well done to Mark Barnett, Michael Buckler and the crew at McKinnon Parade for putting on another successful event.
Thank you to Messenger Community Newspapers and Lenzerheide Restaurant for supporting the incentive for Over 45 athletes in Over 35 races which was once again well received by the veteran veterans of the League.
The League is also very appreciative for the efforts of all organising clubs and sponsors for their support of all SA Athletic League Carnivals. I would like to make a special mention to the Mort Daly Running Foundation who provided $13,000 in prizemoney which helped out throughout the course of last season.
We look forward to another exciting summer in 2008/09.

FEMALE ATHLETES’ REPRESENTATIVE’S REPORT
As part of the SA Athletic League committee, I have had great pleasure in representing all the female registered athletes this year. It turned out to be a great season again with competitions like Mt Gambier, the Bay Sheffield and Loxton being just some of the highlights. The girls did a great job being consistently involved in the League, still competing in what felt like the hottest heat wave ever and enjoying the odd drink or two at the many after parties we had this season.
It was good to meet more girls that run with the League, and many approached me with their thoughts, issues and opinions throughout the season. The League took into consideration all of these concerns and it was great to see a proactive and dedicated committee.
There has been a lot of talk about the prize money that females receive in most races throughout the duration of the season, compared to that of males. This has also sparked much conversation about the prize money of distance races compared to the sprint races. With the females getting together to discuss what changes can be made next season, we have come to some sound decisions and hope to see these changes implemented in the next few seasons to come. It is encouraging to see our female runners offer their help and assistance to facilitate these concerns.
Female runners who had a great season in 07/08 were Kim Letton, who won the Glenelg 120m Women’s Gift, Camden 120m Women’s Gift, Loxton 120m Women’s Gift and Flagstaff Hill 120m Women’s Gift. She would be very happy with her performances this season and even with a big adjusted mark after winning Loxton, she still went on to win the Flagstaff Hill 120m Women’s Gift. I think she’s still a threat to all of us other sprinters in the 08/09 season to come, so look out for her.
Emily Hyde, a Toby Schreier coached runner, also had a fantastic season after being injured in the previous year. She won the Flinders Women’s 800m (representing her club very nicely), Colley Reserve Women’s 1600m and the Plympton Women’s 1000m. She will be a big threat out at amateurs this year, but we’ll see if she can cope with her adjusted mark in the SAAL for 08/09. Others including Paige White, Celeste Knowles, Lucy Buckly, Leanne Hodge and Courtney Evans also came away with a few sashes under their belt.
Thanks to all the athletes and officials that encouraged me with my new position this year. I hope for an even more successful season in 08/09 and look forward to being part of the League once again.

OFFICIALS’ REPRESENTATIVE’S REPORT
We have successfully completed another athletics season, and I sincerely thank all Officials who have contributed to this success. It is clearly acknowledged that all Officials are volunteers, and it has been very pleasing to regularly hear athletes acknowledging the work of the officials.
I personally thank all of the officials for their efforts, dedication and professionalism. I will not attempt to mention every individual because Murphy’s Law dictates that someone will be overlooked and offended, so I thank all equally.
I will however specifically mention a few.
• We have all been made aware of the fact that Brian Hart is stepping down from the Chief Starter role after a long and distinguished period. Brian deserves all of the accolades, and it is pleasing that he has prepared a young and dedicated replacement.
• I congratulate Brenda Pearl on her Life Membership.
• I make special mention of the contribution of Evan Brimble. It is great to have some young blood in the official’s ranks and I sincerely hope we will see Evan back next season. I have plans to expand his role and make his contribution a bit more diverse and interesting.
• I also acknowledge the cameo appearances of Ward Swansson, John Barker and Luke Czaban, for helping out whenever they could, thanks guys.
One area which has suffered from the lack of an official is equipment management. We are conducting a review of some of the equipment with a view of upgrading as much as the budget will allow.
On behalf of the League, I thank each and every official for their tireless efforts. On behalf of the officials, I thank the athletes for their cooperation, congratulate them on their very professional representation of the sport, and for their appreciation of the role, responsibilities and efforts of the officials. I also thank the League Committee and Patrons for their support.

MALE ATHLETES’ REPRESENTATIVE’S REPORT
I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year in this role, working with a committed and dynamic group of people on the SA Athletic League Management committee. I would like to begin by thanking the committee and members for their support, and personally commending Brendan, Colin, Michelle and Cheryl for their efforts to help our League.
The SA Athletic League provides a diverse and rich range of events for our Male athletes, and the level of competition is outstanding, and the envy of other professional bodies in this country.
With so many brilliant Male performances throughout the season it seems a little unfair to single a couple out, but for those who were witness to the following 2, they would agree these are worthy indeed of further recognition; Duncan Tippins’ effort in winning the Camden Classic was amazing, and for sheer entertainment, the history-making tie between Dale Engler and Toby Medlin in the Select Mile at the Bay Sheffield.
It has been encouraging to see a number of athletes put their hand up to help organise carnivals and seek sponsorship for the events, and the League. This is something which needs to continue. We have an excellent opportunity to promote our sport and our athletes via means of some excellent carnivals, including the well organised country meets we are fortunate to have.
If athletes have opinions or ideas which could benefit our sport I sincerely encourage you to talk to your athletes’ representatives.
The last thing I ask of our athletes, is where possible please support the sponsors who support us. Where possible, mention it is through their association with the SA Athletic League that has led you to them. This can only help our league as we move forward with aims of increasing prizemoney and promotion of our events.
Finally, congratulations to the Male athletes who took home end of season awards. Brian Golden was a worthy winner of the Mort Daly medal, beating home a long time league member Duncan Tippins and one of the new stars of the SA Athletic League, Bryce Watkins.
