Worked with faculty, off-campus scholars, and local community institutions to generate and coordinate interdisciplinary research projects on issues related to Latin America and US Latino populations. Led a team of qualitative researchers in a project to examine impacts of arts-based programming for Latino youth in low-income neighborhoods of Washington, DC, and authored final report analyzing findings.

Carried out study of youth perceptions and practices of democracy in the context of Ecuador’s “Citizen Revolution,” which expanded spaces for excluded groups’ political participation. Conducted interviews and focus groups with over 200 young adults from diverse communities throughout two Ecuadorian provinces. Shared findings through presentations and reports with youth participants, government agencies, and civil society organizations.

Oversaw three community-based advocacy and educational projects to reduce violence and militarism. In low-income neighborhoods of New York, worked with youth and community leaders to identify and advocate for effective solutions to gun violence, including stricter regulations. During the Iraq War, coordinated campaign to highlight the economic and human costs of the war. Led outreach efforts to publicize misleading military recruitment techniques in communities of color, including conducting workshops and presentations at high schools and community colleges.

Intern, Democratic Dialogue Program, May-August 2004

Planned and managed Guatemala’s “Youth Democratic Dialogue,” a three-day retreat and training for 30 young adults of diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. Designed and facilitated training activities on democratic participation and citizenship. Conducted pre- and post-workshop interviews with participants.
