Course Objectives:

The course focuses on two areas; 1- functional assessment of behavior (FBA) using interviews and behavioral observations and 2- using assessment data to develop and monitor a behavior intervention plan (BIP) in school settings. Students will develop an understanding of how and why problem behaviors occur, basic assessment strategies and a practical repertoire of specific strategies designed to address the management of common and atypical, social and emotional maladaptive behaviors.

Expectations of Students:

• 90% attendance is required to for a passing grade, irrespective of grades on the other class requirements. If absences exceed 90%, special arrangements have to be made with the instructor.

• Be respectful of the instructor and your classmates, turn off cell phones, pagers etc.

• Be prepared and ready to discuss the material when you come to class.

• Contact instructor with any questions and/or concerns. Office hour will be immediately after class, or you can call or email.

• Adhere to the BYU Honor Code ()

• If you require accommodations or services due to a disability please contact Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) Office (801-422-2767).

Course Requirements:

Tests: Two tests will be administered, a mid-term and a final. (Essay and define the terms type). Each test is worth 100 points or 20% of your grade.

Assignments: Three class assignments will be required throughout the semester, each worth 100 points (20%) of your final grade.

1. Behavior Change Project

2. Intervention Paper

3. FBA / BIP Case Study and Report

Behavior Change Project: (100 points)

• You might find it helpful to use ; chart dog.

• Select and objectively define a behavior (e.g., number of pages read per day, weight loss, number of times your dog comes on command, etc.).

• If your subject is not yourself, a family member (consent received), or a family pet, you must approve it with me.

• Select a technique to measure the behavior (e.g., observation, count occurrences, duration, latency, permanent product, likert rating, etc.)

• Select a single subject design (e.g., AB,ABAB, multiple baseline, changing criterion, etc.)

• Define an intervention to be used (e.g., posted feedback, self-recording, time out [has to be approved], relaxation training, etc.)

• Collect baseline data for at least three data collection sessions

• Implement the intervention and collect data and run for at least five days

• Graph the data and prepare a brief presentation (no more than 10 slides) and handout.

• Presentation should include 1- Title; 2 – Introduction: references and what has been done in the past; 3- Method: subject, design, steps for intervention; 4- Results & Discussion (Explain the results, problems, comments, what you would have done differently); 5- Graphed data: graph data by design.

• Half page summary of your project idea is due September 24, 2009 (15 points).

• Projects are due November 5, 2009. We will have class presentations that day.

Intervention Paper: (100 points)

• Pick three papers that represent one type of intervention (PBIS, Check-in check-out, time out, peer tutoring, token economy). Do not pick a condition such as hyperactivity, depression or aggression. The papers must be scientifically based from the years 1995-2008, no anecdotal wonders, no theoretical papers, or reviews of an area. If the article doesn’t have a research design and a dependent measure (target behavior to be changed), it cannot be used for the paper. You will be writing an abstract for each of the three papers.

• Turn in a listing of the papers you are selecting (APA format) and at the time midterm (15 points). The final intervention papers are due on the day of the final (Dec. 18) with the articles attached.

• Use the abstract outline below for the three papers.

• Provide an introduction to the three papers which should include:

o How your intervention has been described.

o Are there variants on the intervention (time out sit and look, think time, soda pop time out, etc.)

o How have others used the intervention and for what behaviors?

o Are there cautions that should be associated with your intervention?

• Abstract Outline (Typed, Double Spaced)

o Reference: APA Format

o Descriptors: What type of subjects (hyperactive students), setting (school classroom), intervention (on task behavior)

o Precis: A brief one or two sentence description of the study (a randon beep program was used to reinforce hyperactive children in a special education classroom to stay on task).

o Introduction: This section should briefly describe any background information found in the introduction of the paper. (Rationale for study, previous studies, special issues, etc).

o Discussion: This section should include a more detailed description of the subjects, design, setting, and target behavior (dependent measure). Enough detail given for replication.

o Comments: This section should include in your own words what you thought was important about his study and what makes it unique. Include any drawbacks or criticisms.

o Cautions: This section should include any procedural concerns you may have about the techniques used in the study.

FBA/BIP Case Study and Report: (100 points)

• A comprehensive written report of the FBA/BIP project including data gathered, summarized, and interpreted.

• You will be expected to discuss your FBA/BIP progress throughout the semester with the class during the open discussion / consultation section of the class.

• You will be expected to present your comprehensive report to the class the last few weeks of the semester. You may choose to include a 1-page handout for your audience. The presentation is worth 15 points toward the final 100.

• You should reference the NCSP Case Study Rubric as a guide for your assessment and report. (A copy will be provided for you, or you can access it at )

• To help break down the final report you can turn in your FBA and BIP to receive feedback before writing the final report. You can earn 15 points each, (FBA and BIP) toward your final 100 points by turning in something early. Examples of an appropriate FBA and BIP will be covered in class.

• The comprehensive written report is due the last day of class, December 10, 2008.

Extra Credit:

Read the book The Psychology of Influence, by Robert Cialdini and prepare a brief executive summary of the book (3-4 pages) including the applicability of the lessons in an educational setting. The summary is worth 50 points toward your final grade. The summary is due the last day of class.
