Subject: Global Gallivant Project

Project Description: For your Global Gallivant projects, you will be planning a virtual trip around the world making four stops, no more than one per continent and two being in the Southern Hemisphere, two in the Northern Hemisphere. Strewn throughout these stops will be journal entries and post cards. Before you begin, you will turn in a travel plan and a map showing your route and stopping points. You will find templates for the travel plan, travel map, journal entries, and post cards in this packet, as well as in your folder on the server.

You must complete the activities in the order they are presented. If you work on the activities out of order, you will miss deadlines and end up with zeroes for parts of this project.

Materials Needed:

1. Map

2. Templates in this packet

3. mrsrubach.

4. Word processing program (Word)

5. Colored-pencils

6. Glue stick

7. Scissors

(You will be responsible for 5-7.)

Deadlines and Procedures:

1. Travel Plan approval—Wednesday, March 14

2. Travel Map approval—Thursday, March 15 (end of class)

3. Journal Entry for Stop 1 –Thursday, March 22

4. Journal Entry for Stop 2— Thursday, March 29

5. Post Card #1—Monday, April 1 (end of class)

6. Journal Entry for Stop 3—Thursday, April 12

7. Journal Entry for Stop 4—Thursday, April 19

8. Post Card #2—Monday, April 23 (end of class)

9. T-shirt Design—Thursday, April 26

10. PowerPoint Slides/Brochure—Monday, May 7

** You may turn in any of the above before each deadline.

** Deadlines may be adjusted due to unknown events. It is YOUR responsibility to record the changes on this sheet.

Outcome: This project will help you 1) compare, contrast, and evaluate ideas and information from various sources and genres; 2) write compositions using complete sentences and conventions; 3) use available technology to produce compositions and multimedia works; 4) deliver a planned oral presentation.

Activity 1—Travel Plan

• The travel plan should contain visits to four major cities. (Remember that the ease of your research is dependent on your city selections.)

• No more than two stops per continent. [The seven continents include North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica.]

• Make sure two of the cities are in the southern hemisphere (south of the equator) and two are in the northern hemisphere (north of the equator). Use the chart at the end of this packet to work up a draft of your travel plan.

• If you would like the teacher to take a look at the first draft of your Travel Plan before you turn it in for a grade, that would be fine.

• You must receive the teacher’s approval on this plan before you can proceed with your travel map.

Due Date: Wednesday, March 14

Activity 2—Travel Map

• After receiving the teacher’s approval of your travel plan, you will create a travel map by drawing your route on the world map.

• You will draw the first draft of this trip on the small world map in this packet.

• Label the four cities with the name of the city, territory/country beside a dot in the approximate location that you will be visiting.

• Draw lines with arrows to show the direction of your trip from one stop to the next.

• Your trip will begin and end in St. Louis, Missouri, (marked with a star on the map) which will not be counted as one of your stops.

• After the teacher approves the first draft, draw out your trip on the back of the returned, graded Travel Plan following the same directions you did for the first draft.

• After approval from the teacher, you may proceed on your trip.

Due Date: Thursday, March 15

EC: If you calculate the distance between cities and write that in miles on the lines between the cities, you may receive extra credit. (Use the How far is it? on .)

Activity 3—Trip Journals

This is where you will keep a journal of your trip around the world. (You need to take notes on this information before you begin writing your journal entry.) However, you are responsible for including specific components for each of the trip’s stops. The components that each entry should include along with information about each follow:

➢ Name of City

➢ Name of Country

➢ Stop Number

➢ Relative location—The city’s location in relation to another famous/well-known place

➢ Language(s) Spoken

➢ Weather / Climate

➢ Major Tourist Attractions—monuments, parks, buildings, bodies of water, mountains, etc.

➢ Extra Credit Information

➢ Absolute location—The city’s latitude & longitude

➢ The value of 100 U.S. dollars in that country

➢ Cultural Items of Interest—festivals, food, clothing, music, religion, housing, etc.

➢ Plant native to that country (*explain the connection to climate & vegetation)

➢ Animal found in that country

Your journal entries should also include personal experience with some of these factors, which is where the fictitious part of your stories should build in. This is where you will display your creative writing in an original written account of your trip.

Place: London, England

Stop # 1

Today, after a 14 hour flight across the Atlantic Ocean from the US, we landed in London, England.

I’m just happy our first stop is in a country that speaks English since I’m not too good with other

languages. When we hopped off of the plane, it was cold and rainy. I was told that it’s usually like this

and that sunshine is a rarity. But, that didn’t stop me from being excited about seeing some sites.

The first tourist attraction I wanted to visit was Big Ben. I’ve always heard about the giant clock tower

and thought it would be neat to climb up. So we did. Wow, could we see a lot from up there. The next

site to see was the London Bridge. It really hasn’t fallen down and it still crosses the Thames River.

After crossing London Bridge, we visited the Tower of London where the Crown Jewels are kept. Wow! I

never thought I’d be in a room with crowns of real kings and queens!

After all of our site seeing, I wanted a real British meal, so we stopped in at a pub and I had some fish

and chips (fried potatoes). When I asked for a Coke, they brought it to me without ice. Ick! Imagine a

warm Coke! Anyway, we ate outside on a sidewalk and a little squirrel kept pestering me for a snack, so I

shoed him away.

Well, I’d better hop into bed so that I’m well rested for my trip to Rome, Italy tomorrow. I can hardly

wait!

Activity 4—Post Cards

• In a manner similar to that of your journal, you will be completing post cards that reflect the various stops on your trip.

• After your second, and fourth stops, you will be sending home post cards describing your trip up to that point. (Use the Post Card Template in your GLOBAL GALLIVANT folder on the server.)

• The blank front (top) of each post card should contain a picture characteristic from that stop and a heading/title.

• On the back of the postcard, you will see a text box with the words About the picture: You must give a title for that picture with a little bit of information about it.

• Below the picture title, you will write your message, which will tell something about one of the two previous stops.

• You must turn in your postcard and receive approval from the teacher before proceeding to the next stop on your trip.

• Post cards may be completed using colored pencils and paper, or by using clipart or pictures from the Internet in Word.

Materials & Resources:

Atlases, Internet, Colored Pencils, Paper, Template

Due Date:

Post Card 1 (Stop #1 OR #2): Monday, April 1 (end of class)

Post Card 2 (Stop #3 OR #4): Monday, April 23 (end of class)

Activity 5—Souvenir T-shirts

• Using the T-shirt template in your Global Gallivant folder on the server, you will create a souvenir T-shirt from your trip.

• It will include a picture from ONE of your stops.

• It will also include some sort of caption (title for picture, funny saying for the picture, etc.).

• You may want to search the Internet, look at Clip Art, or a picture from a book, or even an original drawing to use on your shirt.

• Make sure your graphic (picture for the shirt) is appropriate and represents one of your stops.

Reading back over your journal entries and/or postcards could be very helpful in coming up with ideas.

Due Date: Thursday, April 26

Assignment Sheet

1. You must visit four places on your trip. You may only make one stop per continent, and at least two stops must be in the Southern Hemisphere, which means that two stops must be in the Northern Hemisphere.

2. A travel plan sheet must be completed before you “take off” on your trip.

3. A map of the world will be marked with the locations of the places you are going to visit. You should use lines and arrows to show the route and direction of your trip, along with labeling the cities on the map. You will also be responsible for calculating the distance between each stop, putting that number between the stops. Additionally, you will calculate the total distance of your trip. (Use )

4. A final travel plan and travel map must be completed before you begin your “travels.”

5. A journal of your trip must be kept, containing certain information and including your experiences at each stop.

6. You must send two postcards home to your favorite teacher (Mrs. Rubach) to let her know how you are doing. The postcards should come after the second and fourth stops on your trip. The blank postcards will be provided to you but must be designed by you with a place characteristic(s) from that stop. Your message will talk about the present
