Directions for activity

Cut and assemble the number line using tape or a stapler. After the number line is assembled allow the students to work in groups and color the decades or multiples of ten (10, 20, 30) in alternating colors.

Using color circles like the ones in the picture have the students take turns applying the same color circle under each number that rounds to 10, 20, 30, etc. While the students apply the color circles they should say:

" 11 rounds to 10 because it is 1 number away from 10." " 12 rounds to 10 because it is 2 numbers away from 10." " 13 rounds to 10 because it is 3 numbers away from 10."

The students will continue to look at each number until they complete the entire number line.

When students are finished with the number line, build in time for them to complete the rounding reflection sheet. A blank number line is also included so that you can generate any number line you

! 10 would like!

Note: When the students get to the number 15, they should notice that 15 is 5 numbers away 10 and 5 numbers away from 20. Since the number 15 is in the middle of two decades they should round to the higher decade.

Have students place color circles under each number
