The successful D-Day landings established the Allied into France; they could now attack inland and onto Germany.

Hitler ordered an attack in the Ardennes. ‘The battle of the Bulge’ was devastating for the Nazis as they lost badly.

The RAF and USAAF bombed Germany killing 600,000 civilians they also targeted roads & industry with bombs.

At sea the German U-boats had at first been successful. But American technology in radar saw the US and UK win.

The German army had been defeated at Stalingrad, Russia in 1943. After the defeat they were always in retreat.

The Soviet Red Army(Russian) had forced the Nazis out of Russia by Dec 1944 and began moving towards Germany.

The Russian invasion meant Germany was fighting war on two fronts. They didn’t have the resources to fight Russia.

Once the Nazis had been forced out of Russia, the Red Army liberated Poland and other Eastern Countries.

The Soviets attack on Berlin in 1945 was fierce. The German soldiers were mainly Volkssturm & Hitler Youth.

The Soviet attack on Berlin saw Hitler accept defeat. He married Eva Braun & shot himself on the 30th April.

Germany surrendered 07/05/45 fearing further Soviet attacks. Germany had been destroyed. Nazis defeated.
