Paluch 1Landry Paluch Interior Design II- Ms. IveyHonors Cultural Exploration Project22 April 2015Have you ever wanted to learn about a different country and its culture? Learning about other countries and their culture and comparing it with yours is very fun and interesting. I’m going to teach you a little bit about Mexico and its culture, history of its interior design, and even compare it to ours in the USA. I will be making a model of what a room would look like in Mexico and fill it with what it needs to become a typical Mexican home. Mexico is a beautiful country that you think would be known for its food but it is known for its tequila, which is made from cactus that is grown in its mild climate. It is the 14th largest country in the world. 92.7% of the population speaks Spanish and other indigenous languages. Mexicans really value their hierarchy, structure in business, and family matter. Families are typically large and they are typically very close to one another, siblings, extended family, and even close with friends. Hosting parties at their home is a big part of the Mexican lifestyle. Always making sure visitors feel comfortable and welcomed is a part. Another big part of the Mexican culture is their art and literature. Clay pottery, embroidered cotton garments, rugs, and angular designs are some of the most common arts. When I think of Mexico I think of the bright, vibrant colors that they are very well known for. Mexico is very pretty, bright country that just sticks out from all the rest. Paluch 2 Mexico’s interior design is a little unique from all the other countries. It sticks out and really makes a dramatic statement. The most important thing about Mexican interior design is you have to love colors. This culture is all about making a bright bold statement in your house. The bright bold colors give the home a gorgeous, fiesta, hot climate atmosphere. It also gives off a relaxing, joyful, welcoming vibe to anyone who steps foot in the house. The colors used in this culture vary because so many bright bold colors are used but the main colors used when talking about the Mexican culture are: tints and shades of blue, yellow, dark reds, greens, browns, and many more. As well as all the bright colors on the walls, texture plays a big role as well to get the Mexican feel. The plaster effects as well as the color wash are two great ways to show off texture. Flooring in a Mexican home is very essential. When picking flooring for natural Mexican inspired houses go with hard flooring such as, clay tiles, ceramic tiles, and limestone. As in an authentic Mexican home you will most likely find patterned tiling as flooring and occasionally walling. To really make your whole scheme really go together you have to have the right fitting furniture. A simple, rustic, antique furnishing is most common. To add a little color some houses paint their furniture bright, bold colors. Mosaics and patterns are well expressed throughout the homes. Little accessories found around the house include: bright, woven blankets and throws, paintings, pottery, and to give off the whole Mexican feel a cactus plant. Many countries and their cultures have different interior designs. The way you decorate your home is based on your culture and what you believe in. Mexico and the United States have some similar features along with some different ones. The interior design of Mexico is all based off of bright, vibrant colors, textured walls and flooring, decorated with meaningful accessories Paluch 3such as, blanket and or throws, and pottery. As for the interior design of the United States, Americans tend to decorate their homes in very similar but also very different ways. Neutral colors are often used; tile, hard wood flooring, and carpet are common. They accessorize their house in many different ways depending on the person. The model of Mexico’s interior design I made expresses the design used in Mexico as well as possible. I decided to model a living room due to this being a room I could use to exhibit all the colors, textures, and accessories they use. Walls are commonly textured from the plaster and colored by authentic pigment so I used a burnt orange and used the dry brush effect to get the texture of the plaster. The flooring is a hard, natural look and ceramic tile, and clay tile are common so I found a nice clay tile to compliment the color of the walls. The furniture in a Mexican style home can come in a few different ways depending on the scheme you’re wanting. Bright colors and patterns are big part of their culture so I decided to cover the furniture in bright, patterned fabrics. As for the accessories placed around the room I choose to place a bright patterned rug on the clay tile to add some more color to the floor and room. I also brought an essential of there’s into the room and placed a cactus plant on the coffee table in the room. Everything in my model displayed the Mexican culture.
