Live is a program that blends personalized, online learning with teacher directed instruction to empower struggling learners to close the learning gap between themselves and their peers. This consistent instructional approach ensures students are working toward grade level literacy. Students will experience two key instructional elements- Word Training and Text Training. These two distinct components combine to build essential fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. Textbooks/Online ResourcesStudents will be provided with classroom sets of the Language! Live Manuals. The Language! Live manuals will also be accessible online. Students will have laptops in order to access the Language! Live curriculum. Course OutlineThere are 12 units with 10 lessons in each unit. The following literacy elements will be addressed:Reinforcing vowel and consonant soundsBlending and reading wordsRhymingReading phrases and sentencesSyllabificationSpellingFluencyText structureText typesStory elementsWritingStudents will alternate between teacher directed instruction and online instruction. If you have any questions, please call or email me.Grading ProcedureStudents will be graded based on their participation in class and their progress both in the online and teacher directed instruction. Tests: 35%Quizzes: 30%Classwork: 25% Homework: 10% Grading ScaleA-90-100-Outstanding AchievementB- 80-89- Commendable AchievementC-70-79- Acceptable (Average)D-69-60- Minimum AchievementF- 59-0- Unsatisfactory ProgressProgress ReportsGrades will be reported to parents at progress report time (halfway through the nine week grading period).Report CardsReport Cards will be sent home at the end of each grading period. If a parent or guardian has a question about a student’s grade, please contact me by telephone or email. A parent conference may be arranged, if necessary.AssignmentsStudents will be expected to complete all assignments online and in the classroom. The teacher will monitor a student’s online activity and provide feedback on their progress.HomeworkHomework is an effective tool in developing responsibility, study habits and skills. The self-paced online component is accessible 24 hours a day from any computer. Because of this flexibility, students are expected to independently work on their assignments outside the classroom if they have access to a computer at home. If not, the student will be given the opportunity to complete the assignment in class.Late AssignmentsStudents are expected to progress through the curriculum at a steady pace. If a student is experiencing difficulty and needs extra time to complete an assignment, he/she will be given an opportunity to do so. The overall goal of Language! Live is for the student to master the objective. Feedback will be given to students on a daily basis.AssessmentAssessments that are designed for diagnostic purposes only and used to determine a student’s progress and needs will not be graded. Benchmark assessments will be given in September, January and May. Disciplinary ProceduresStudents will be required to follow the rules and regulations outlined in the student handbook and student code of conduct.
