2016 NEWSLETTER : WEEK 18 – AUGUST 20 - 21

Widnes are promoted

WIDNES became the first club in the League to be promoted this season when they registered their eighth successive victory in Division Two, by eight wickets at Mobberley

With a record of 13 wins and only one defeat, Widnes must now finish in one of the top two spots, although Upton, 46 points adrift, could still pip them for the title.

Widnes dismissed Mobberley for 113, Nathan Wood 41, South African Marcus Fourie 3-13, Danny Nughton 3-19, then replied with 114-2, Naughton 34. It’s good to see the better times returning at Beaconsfield road

Upton kept up the pressure with a six wickets victory against bottom club Middlewich at Old Greasby Road. They replied with 181-4, Nat Sariman 51 after Middlewich had posted a testing 180-8, Kieron Boyle contributing 85 and Matt Ingram taking 6-61.

Stockport edged up to third place – 71 points behind – with a comfortable 72 runs win at Alvanley, Tom Facer scoring 80 for the winners.

There was also victory for Christleton at home to Brooklands, with Kiwi all-rounder Joshua Joseph scoring 77, then taking 3-45.

Backed by a fine 101 from their Jamaican batsman Marlon Barclay, Barrow had the better of a draw at home to struggling Congleton – Iro De Silva 7-69. Ben Scowen scored 90 and put on 136 for the third wicket with Tom Leese, 51, for the Bears

Lindow v Northwich was one of several games affected by rain and was abandoned all-square: Lindow 150 (Sam Stoneley 5-39) Northwich 129-8 (Scott Howarth 4-44). .

NO SHIFTING ALDERLEY - Wilkinson 9-35

TO the dismay of the chasing pack, Alderley Edge show no signs of releasing their grip on the ECB Premier League leadership, their 12th win – by eight wickets at Cheadle – keeping them 41 points clear with four games to play.

Richard Wilkinson gave the best individual performance of the day with figures 16-3-35-9 to rout Cheadle for 81 on a responsive pitch at Kingsway. Alderley replied with 82-2, Calum Rowe 41 not out

Bowdon stay on their tail, winning by 49 runs at home to wooden spoonists Urmston, despite the Parkinson brothers returning from first-class cricket duties. Jack Tipton, 44, top scored in Bowdon’s 204-9, Lancashire’s Matt Parkinson claiming 5-37. Urmston replied with 155, Chris Turner 71, Callum Parkinson - now of Derbyshire - scoring 40. Ollie Makin took 3-46.

Chester edged up to third place with a commanding 126-run home win against Timperley, Lee Dixon scoring 115 (13 fours and two sixes) in a tally of 256-5. Timperley mustered 130, leg-spinner Jack Williams celebrated gaining his Cheshire cap with a superb 7-41 return.

Hyde’s challenge faltered when Pennine mist descended on Werneth Low soon after tea in their match against Neston, which the Wirral side were controlling. Simon Stokes hit 89 and Prithvi Sarvaiya 68 in Neston’s tally of 234-7, Will Walker 5-60. Hyde were in trouble at 125-4 from 14 overs, Harry Dearden 37, when play was halted.

Rain was also the winner at Bramhall where Nantwich were pursuing a much-needed victory after totting up 181-9, Rob Cook-Sievewright 43, Rupes Kitzinger 3-35. Bramhall were struggling at 82-7, Ifti Naseer holding on for a key unbeaten 29 when rain and arrived. Jimmy Warrington had taken a very speedy 4-34.

There was even less play at Macclesfield, who were 61-5 against Toft (Andrew Jackson 4-29), when the umpires took ‘em off.

Bramhall in NatWest Club T20 final at Derby

BRAMHALL trounced Pennine League club Norden by 57 runs in the ECB NatWest National Club T20 Area Final at Church Lane on Sunday. They now join three of country’s best T20 teams in the national Finals on the Derbyshire county ground on Tuesday, September 6 – hopefully live on Sky tv - see page 6 for details. Bramhall also top the current Fair Play table (page 7).

Bramhall trounce Norden as

T20 run leads to National final

A FINE all-round display of T20 cricket at its best saw Bramhall defeat Pennine League club Norden by 57 runs before a large crowd at Church Lane to qualify for the NatWest Club National T20 finals day at Derby. It will be the club’s first appearance in a national final since memorably winning the Club knock-out against Bath at Lord’s in 2001.

The ultimate stage of this new venture - which began with a 45-runs home victory over Didsbury in the League group stage back on May 24 - will take place on the Derbyshire county ground on Tuesday, September 6. Bramhall’s opponents will be one of Tunbridge Wells (Kent League), Sandiacre (Derbyshire premier) and Swardeston (East Anglian premier), the draw not yet having been made.

Bramhall had the match virtually won by the halfway mark in their innings when they had posted 119-2, Danny Lamb smacking a superb 71 and Matt Hughes 61. They went on to total a massive 186-8 at 9.3 runs per over.

Norden never looked meeting their target and were tied down by fine bowling, notably from Ashley West (3-23) and Chris Sanders (3-30), while Lamb took 0-13 off four tight overs, all aided agile fielding, great wicket-keeping by Sam Johnson, who had five victims and good leadership from Nick Cantello. Norden closed on 129-8.

Bramhall President Richard Cragg afterwards made a charming speech praising the quality and sporting spirit of the opposition, complimenting his own players and wishing them well in the final. He was delighted to see such a large crowd on the ground and hoped the spectators had enjoyed their visit enough to come again.

He revealed that the Man of the Match award was won by Bramhall all-rounder Danny Lamb. The player had earlier learned he had been called up for Lancashire’s county championship match against Surrey at The Oval this week.

TOP UMPIRES AWARD FOR TONY MORRIS

LEAGUE Assistant & Registration secretary and long-serving panel umpire Tony Morris is to be awarded an ECB ACO Honorary Life membership at the annual meeting and conference of the umpires’ organisation at Lord’s on October 29.

O At the League’s August Cricket Committee meeting, Mr Morris reported that there had been 32 overseas players registered during the season, 12 x two-year overseas registrations; 6 x 180 days overseas registrations and five county contracted players. He had also completed 22 transfers.

HELMETS

However, all players under 18 must wear helmets and which must be up to British Safety Standards.

TRIAL BALLS

THERE will be no further trials this season of the Superior Reader Sovereign cricket balls in the ECB Premier League after all 12 clubs used them for one round of fixtures in August. Clubs gave mixed reports of the ball which costs £3 more than the current £15 Reader ball.

Macclesfield’s overseas player Nick Bertus has been issued with a caution for abusing the captain of opposing club Hyde n an ECBN Prekier Leaqgue matcdh. .

3rd XI CRICKET CONCERN

THE Cricket Committee considered reports of several clubs withdrawing from the 3rd XI cricket set-up including Woodford and Winnington Park. One proposal to counter this trend is the formation of an Association of Friendly Clubs with a minimum of regulations in 2017. This couldbe discussed at a special Third XI meeting to be called in October.
