Junior Meeting Information Sheet (2020-2021)

It is recommended that every student interested in attending college after graduation does as much college search preparation during their junior year as possible so they are not overwhelmed during their senior year. Here is a list of recommendations and things to keep in mind while searching for a college or major.

Naviance : Web-based computer program paid for by the Clark Foundation that Mount Markham students can use to assist them with college and career research. To access the Naviance website, go to the Mount Markham website, hover over ‘High School’ and click ‘Naviance.’ For account help, please go to the guidance office.

• Choose a career to work toward and then select a college major that will help you achieve this goal. Recommended sites:

• Choose colleges to look into based on desired major.

o after narrowing down colleges, schedule college visits

• Schedule visits to colleges that you’re interested in learning more about. This will give you an opportunity to see the campus, ask specific questions, and will give them an opportunity to get to know you. Some colleges will only accept students who have formally visited their campus. Be sure to have a conversation with them about courses they recommend you take as a senior.

o You’re encouraged to bring an unofficial transcript with you to show the admissions counselor how you’ve done so far in high school. Please request one from the guidance office.

o You’re also encouraged to ask the admissions counselors if they recommend that you take any certain classes for you to take during your senior year to prepare you for the program you’re looking into.

• Register for the SATs and/or the ACTs to take by the end of the school year (usually April, May, or June). Websites, testing dates, and registration deadlines are listed below.

o Fee waivers can be picked up at the guidance office by students eligible for free or reduced lunch.

o When registering for the SATs or ACTs, Mount Markham’s CEEB code is 335925.

• Anyone considering playing NCAA Division I or II sports in college should register with the NCAA Eligibility Center at the end of their junior year. Students who don’t get cleared through the Eligibility Center before they graduate will not be eligible to play Division I or II sports.
