Make sure that you know the process for applying and deadlines to apply.

October 1, 2017 is the first day that senior families could begin the FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid which must be filed to determine federal, state and local financial aid eligibility. Families file the FAFSA at fafsa.. Complete information about 2017-18 school year updates can be found at studentaid..

The Mount Tabor School Counseling staff will be available on Wednesday, November 29th from 5-7 pm at the Reynolda Branch Library (2839 Fairlawn Dr. NW) to help families with the FAFSA, RDS and any other college application questions.

Some colleges and universities expect families to file the CSS Profile. Find the list of colleges and universities and complete details at cssprofile..

CFNC provides a database of many scholarships available to North Carolina high school students. Check out scholarships.

Many state universities, like Clemson University, the University of South Carolina, the University of Alabama and The Ohio State University, have scholarship programs for out-of-state students with specific GPA and test score credentials-look closely at schools that interest you. There are many more with scholarship programs that fit students with strong academic records. Application deadlines usually range from November 1 to November 15 to December 15. Check university web sites.

ROTC PROGRAMS-The Reserve Officers Training Corp is a college program offered at over 1,700 colleges and universities across the US that prepares young adults to become officers in the US Military. In exchange for a paid college education and guaranteed post-college career, cadets commit to service in the military after graduation. MOUNT TABOR PTSA SCHOLARSHIPS-Join the PTSA by January 1, 2018 to be eligible for $500-$1,000 scholarships

THE WINSTON-SALEM FOUNDATION one-stop application will open on January 1, 2018. Research how to apply for scholarship using the One-Stop Application or to apply for Other Scholarships at . April 1 is the deadline to apply for merit scholarships. August 1 is the deadline to apply for need-based scholarships. We recommend that all students apply by April 1, 2018.

ALLEGACY CREDIT UNIOR MEL HUGHES SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Scholarship opportunities for credit union members; become a member at Mount Tabor or call 336-774-4138

Awards: Four $1,300 scholarships for four-year colleges/universities and four $250 scholarships for technical/community college; additional scholarships available through the General Scholarship Fund.

ACT STUDENT CHAMPTION AWARD

Criteria: The program will recognize one student in each state who is tenacious and persistent, no matter the challenge, and is prepared for life after high school with a goal in mind and plan in place; composite ACT score of 22 on a single test date or a 3.0 GPA (a student who has overcome challenges and can articulate education and career actions)

Award: $500 non-renewable scholarship, certificate, plaque and state-level recognition

Criteria: This program seeks to invest in students who are exemplary role models in their communities and have the initiative to fulfill their educational goals; scholars opportunities for all US students, Asian-American students, African-American students and Hispanic-American students

FLORENCE KIDDER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF THE COLONIAL DAMES OF AMERICA IN THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA

Criteria: NC high seniors who plan to attend any NC college or university; merit of an essay on the assigned topic, plus character, scholastic record and need (the essay prompt is on the subject of Early Immigration to America)

Awards: One $3,000 scholarship and one $1,000 scholarship

WES BURTON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

JOSH GRAY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Mount Tabor seniors who are members of the girls or boys soccer teams and demonstrate strong character and leadership skills, extraordinary team spirit, concern for others, a positive and encouraging attitude toward teammates, and a genuine lover for soccer; academic promise and financial need also considered

Award: $1,000

EDWARD KENT WELCH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Mount Tabor seniors who are accepted to and plan to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and demonstrate academic promise, evidence of strong moral character, genuine concern for others, and school and/or community leadership

Award: $500

Deadline: all seniors who plan to attend UNC-Chapel Hill are considered in early May 2017; recipient announced at Senior Awards Dayu

RUBIN FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Mount Tabor High School seniors who will pursue a degree at a UNC system school; minimum cumulative 3.0 unweighted GPA; minority students who will be first in immediate family to attend college; demonstrate financial need

Award: Four consecutive years of undergraduate tuition and fees

AUBREY LEE BROOKS SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: North Carolina resident and graduating senior permanently residing in one of the following counties: Alamance, Bertie, Caswell, Durham, Forsyth, Granville, Guilford, Orange, Person, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Swain or Warren and planning to attend North Carolina State University, UNC-Chapel Hill or UNC-Greensboro; successful applicants have excellent high school grades and SAT/ACT scores, have participated in extracurricular activities, volunteered in their community and/or been regularly employed and have demonstrated leadership; applicants must demonstrate financial need based on completion of the FAFSA which must be filed by January 31, 2016

Awards: Scholarships up to approximately one-half of the cost of an undergraduate education

Deadline: January 31, 2018 for submitting the scholarship application (including transcript and ACT/SAT scores) and the FAFSA; recommendations are requested via an email and completed online

Criteria: Along with the eligibility requirements listed beside each scholarship, these awards are all based on good character and participation in school and community activities

Eunice Riggins Memorial Scholarship (girl in top 10% of class)

Mary Rose Mills-Linda Rankin Memorial Scholarship (girl or boy in top 10% of class)

Clare Johnson Marley-Mary Earle Berger Fine Arts Scholarship (top 20% of class with music, dance, visual arts, or drama talent-proof of talent by the submission of a CD/DVD or portfolio of work-and plans to major in a fine arts area)

NORTH CAROLINA ALPHA DELTA KAPPA STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP (NC COMMUNITY FOUNDATION)

Criteria: Graduating seniors of a NC high school pursuing a degree at a school of higher learning; applicants must have a weighted GPA of 2.5-3.5 and an SAT score (CR+M+W) in the range of 1344-1560 (this is a criteria based on the old SAT; they are looking for a moderately strong score) or an ACT composite score between 20-24; service, integrity and leadership; no financial need information required

NORTH CAROLINA DIVISION OF VETERANS AFFAIRS SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: Funds provide college support to help children of certain disabled, deceased, combat or POW/MIA veterans; students may be eligible for a scholarship if veteran parent was a resident of North Carolina when he or she entered military service

THE NATIONAL MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS SOCIETY’S SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Criteria: Provides scholarships to anyone with multiple sclerosis, or anyone who is the child of some with multiple sclerosis, who will be attending an accredited postsecondary school for the first time.

Awards: Range from $1,000 to $3,000, although a limited number may exceed this amount

ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION “MOST VALUABLE STUDENT” SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: High school seniors based on SCHOLARSHIP (50%), LEADERSHIP (40%), FINANCIAL NEED and QUALITY OF APPLICATION (10%); successful applicants are usually at or near the top 5% of the class and have SAT scores exceeding 1200 (CR & M) or similar ACT

Awards: Local Regional, State, and National scholarships (500 four-year awards), ranging from $1,000 to $15,000 per year-six local scholarships (3 male and 3 female) will be awarded; top scholarship at national level is $50,000

Criteria: Applicants must be pursuing acceptance into a Nursing Program which, upon completion, qualifies the students for taking the nurse licensing exam; students in the top 25% of class are strongest applicants
