FLY ON THE WALL:

Following is an article I borrowed from our District newsletter. It explains how attendance affects funding.

Attendance—By the Numbers—Kelly Adkins, Board Chair

How important is good school attendance? Now more than ever, regular attendance at school plays a vital role in the success of our students and our school district. With the implementation of new common core standards, curriculums, and state assessments, there is an extensive amount of material that must be covered each day in the classroom. A missed day of learning can never be replaced and several missed days can leave students struggling to keep up.

Regular attendance dramatically effects the resources made available to our students. We earn approximately $23 per day in state SEEK funds for each student in attendance. This may not seem like a lot of money, however, our overall attendance

for the district for the 2012-2013 school year was 93.3%. That percentage equates to almost 12 missed days on average per student. For 2,900 students for 175 days, that loss in attendance cost the district $780,000. While it is unrealistic to expect perfect attendance for every student for the entire year, an improvement of just 1.7% to 95% overall attendance would increase revenue to the district by almost $200,000. With continuing funding cuts from the state, those available dollars are vital to our district sustaining current programs and providing resources to our teachers and students.

Your child should know the sound, shape, and how to make the following letters:

S, M, A, R, T, B, N, V, and

s, m, a, r, t, b, n, v.

Your child might be beginning to put those sounds together to read simple words like at, mat, bat, sat, rat, am, Sam. Words like vat and Nat that are unfamiliar are usually harder to read.
