Dear PSJ School Community:

As we move into the 2021-2022 school year, I can say with confidence that it is an honor to help lead one of the best, and most important, high schools in our city and beyond as we move back into in-person learning this school year. There was no clearer evidence of the importance of our school community than the class of 2021 graduation ceremony just last week.

This year, led by our students, we will be continuing our leadership as a school community in providing our students the platform for addressing issues in our communities that they choose – including issues of social injustice, racial inequality, biased educational curriculum, community and state violence and mass incarceration. We want every student to know that they have a place in our school and that we believe in them and their ability to achieve success in the classroom and in their lives. In short, we will continue acting on our mission as a school fighting for social justice to build communities at peace.

We succeeded as a school community during virtual learning and we will continue to succeed as we transition back to in-person schooling. While we love having fun, we’re also not playing about our jobs for our students and families. Our focus is as follows:

1. Helping students build strong and trusting relationships with adults and peers,

2. Challenging and supporting students to stay on track for graduation and post-HS success,

3. Engaging students beyond the classroom with clubs, sports, and community partnerships,

4. Showing learning growth and achievement through student-centered classrooms,

5. Providing real opportunities for student leadership in school and in the community, and

6. Continuing our schoolwide growth around equity, anti-racism and understanding our identities.

We welcome the CLASS OF 2025 with open arms as they transition to high school and to finding themselves as learners, as leaders, and as young people of passion and success. We also welcome the CLASS OF 2024 to the building for the first time in-person!! To help both of these classes come back into the building with confidence and success, we have designed numerous opportunities to come to the school to take care of uniform purchases, get student IDs, pick up the freshman summer reading and get to know the place.

Specifically, we are excited about the following events this summer at Parkway NW ahead of next year:

• Friday, July 9 – Uniform sales and building tour (9:30am – 12:30pm)

• Friday, July 16 – Uniform sales and building tour (9:30am – 12:30pm)

• Wednesday, August 18 – Uniform sales and building tour (9:30am – 12:30pm)

• Thursday, August 19 - Uniform sales and building tour (9:30am – 12:30pm)

• Thursday, August 26 – Class of 2025 orientation (1pm – 3pm)

• Friday, August 27 – Student Government school welcoming party (12pm – 4pm)

I look forward to staying in close touch as we continue to transition back into the building this summer and I wish you nothing but peace, love, equity and justice for all this summer and beyond.

Be well, stay safe and lead on!
