October 17th Virtual Scrabble Tournament

Directed by Adam Henderson

Participant Requirements:

- All participants must email the director 2 videos for each game:

1. A webcam video showing the players face with clear audio. It is recommended that the player talks occasionally during the game so the director can ensure the volume is at an appropriate level. It is also recommended that the player occasionally point the webcam to the players left and right during games.

2. A second video that is a screen recording of the entire game. I recommend ShareX, which can be downloaded here:

Both videos should be uploaded to an accessible URL on the web. Links to both the webcam video and the screen recorded video for every game should be sent to psyadam1@. Do not try to attach the videos as an attachment, as the videos will be too large and will be rejected by gmail. All videos are due by midnight the night of the tournament.

Prohibited forms of Cheating:

Please read this section carefully, as if you do any of these you will be disqualified from the tournament.

Leaving the room

Leaving the room for any reason, including to use the restroom, is strictly prohibited. Adequate time to use the restroom (at least 20 minutes) will be given to players between each game. Rarely, for emergencies, leaving the room during a game may be permitted, but these cases MUST be very rare, and any instance of leaving the room must be explained to the director.

Cell Phones

Any use of a cell phone during the game is prohibited and is grounds for disqualification.

Scrabble-Playing Programs

Any use of a Scrabble-Playing program is strictly prohibited during the game and is grounds for disqualification. This includes, but is not limited to, Quackle and Elise.

Dictionaries

Use of any kind of dictionary, physical or electronic, is strictly prohibited and is grounds for disqualification. Examples include using the computer program Zyzzyva, having a physical dictionary on the desk, or going to a dictionary website, such as , m-, or .

Word lists

The player should not have any word lists, either on the players desk, or hung on a wall or other object near the players desk or within range where the player can see it. If the player is caught looking at a word list during the game, he/she will be disqualified.

Anagrammers

An anagrammer is defined as any program that takes in input and outputs words. Use of an anagrammer is grounds for disqualification. This includes, but is not limited to, online web programs, Zyzzyva, a physical device called a “Franklin”, or any homemade self-coded programs.

Help from a 2nd party

Any form of help from another person is strictly prohibited. This includes having another person observing the game and communicating the opponent's rack to you. If it is clear that you are showing uncanny knowledge of your opponents rack consistently, you will be disqualified.

The above list is not exhaustive. Please do not risk having your reputation damaged by intentionally cheating. Even if you “get away with it”, if your play seems unnaturally inconsistent with your previous in-person performances, you may suffer a loss of reputation as a member of the Scrabble community.

Ok, I think that about covers it. Before the first game of the tournament, I request that the web cam is pointed in various directions towards walls of the room, on the ground and around your desk to show that no word lists are being used. I believe that most NASPA members are honest people and will not intentionally cheat, however I hope that by having videos of both the player and the player's screen, it will prevent most forms of cheating.

Indemnification Agreement: Even with all of the precautions put in place to prevent cheating, it is entirely possible that cheating may still occur. By signing up for this tournament and paying the entry fee, you hold the director, Adam Henderson, harmless from any financial loss of entry fee due to cheating.

The next section has normal tournament details, continue below.

When you're ready to play, politely ask your opponent's handle whether they are ready. Give them time if they need it. If they are ready, match them in an unrated 20 minute game. Whichever player ISC says goes first will go first.

If there are any questions that come up during the tournament, you may message me by typing “tell psyadam” in ISC, or you may email me at ahenders@digipen.edu, and also you may text me at 253-243-5235.

Effect on Ratings: This tournament is unrated by NASPA. The players can choose to have the games rated by ISC if they wish to do so. If either player wants to play unrated, that player has preference.

Divisions: Players will be grouped in divisions of 6, according to their NASPA rating. Unrated players will play in the lowest division unless they have a significantly high ISC rating. Discretion will be used by the director for placing players that do not have a NASPA rating. If the number of players does not divide by 6 evenly, extra players will be added to the top division and the prize pool for that division will be increased.

Entry Fee: $20 US for all divisions. Minimum 4 players for Collins division.

Prizes: Almost 100% of entries returned in cash prizes. 20$ will be taken from the prize pool as a Director Fee for directing the tournament, however the rest will be returned as cash prizes. In the event that a significant number (over 18) of players sign up, the Director Fee will be revised up 10$ for each additional 6 people that sign up.

Example prize table for each div of 6 assuming 12 players:
