Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA)
Website:
The PCA motto: “Shaping Sports so Sports can Shape Kids”
PCA Objectives:
Promote Positive Coaching via the “Double-Goal Coach” model
The “Double Goal Coach” strives to
• Win
• Teach life lessons through sport
Promote an “Honor the Game” sport culture, characterized by respect for “ROOTS.”
R is for Rules
• Rules allow us to keep the game fair.
• You don’t bend the rules to win a game.
O is for Opponents
• Without opponents, there would be no competition.
• We need to honor strong opponents because they challenge us to do our best.
O is for Officials
• We need to respect officials, even if we disagree with their calls. (Officials are not perfect). Without officials the game would be unsafe and unfair.
T is for Teammates
• Being part of a team requires thinking about and respecting our teammates.
• Encourage and support each other on and off the playing field.
S is for Self
• Athletes’ respect for themselves and their own personal standards must come first.
• If I respect myself, I would never do anything that dishonors the game.

The University of Scranton Bochicchio Sport Character Initiative is a group of college and high school professionals who since 2007 have been voluntarily working with schools and youth sports organizations to provide educational programs for coaches, athletes, and parents. Its mission is to foster the development of an exemplary, positive sport culture in Northeastern PA. Since 2010 PIAA District 2 and the Bochicchio Sport Character Initiative have been working in partnership. Each year on National Sportsmanship Day (first Tuesday in March) the partnership hosts a conference at the University of Scranton.

Number of years celebrated – 22. National Sportsmanship Day was first observed on March 5, 1991. Since that time, the Institute for International Sport estimates that over 90 million individuals have actively participated in NSD through their schools, teams or leagues. Over 13,000 schools participate in the program each year. Key objectives of NSD are:
• To designate a day each year during which student-athletes, coaches, administrators and parents engage in thoughtful and reasoned discussion about the role of sportsmanship.
• To promote ethics, honesty and fair play in athletics and in society in general through education and sport.
• To provide participating schools, clubs, and athletic organizations a template to successfully celebrate the day with sportsmanship themed activities, discussion topics, etc.
• To make participation in National Sportsmanship Day an anchor event that fosters good sportsmanship on a year-round basis. As noted above, one of the key objectives of National Sportsmanship Day is to provoke thoughtful discussion and well-planned activities around the issue of sportsmanship. The ultimate goal is that the critical thinking skills developed through such engagement will enable sports to reach its full potential as a positive force in society.
Other Key Aspects of National Sportsmanship Day: A Model School Award; USA Today Essay Contest; Sports Ethics Fellows Program.
