September — Self-ControlKey Scripture Verse: For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. — 2 Timothy 1:7Week 1What does self-control mean?Webster Definition: the power to direct or regulate your actions and emotions Biblical Definition: physical and emotional control of yourself during temptation Devo: Introduction:Talking when we’re not supposed to during class is super hard because we are surrounded by our friends. We may even have a super cool and exciting story to tell about our weekend, baseball game, or something else. This is where self-control steps in. In today’s story, we will be shown a great example at how to have self-control through Jesus and his encounter with Satan. Read Luke 4:1-13 (The Temptation of Jesus)Have two volunteers read this short parable. One child will be Jesus while the other child is Satan.Discussion QuestionsTell me about a time when you were really, really hungry. How badly do you want to eat when you are starving? What did Satan tell Jesus to turn into bread? What did Satan tell Jesus he was going to give him if Jesus worshipped him? Jesus had all the power in the world, and Satan tempted him to show it off. Jesus didn’t. How did Jesus resist temptation? Take Away QuestionsWhat is something you can do to work towards having self-control at school and at home? How does self-control apply to you? What is a situation where you have self-control?What does self-control mean to you? How would you explain it to a friend that did not know what it meant?Week 2Review last week’s devo:Last week, we talked about practicing self-control.We read and talked about the parable of Jesus being tempted by Satan.Sometime it is really hard to have self-control, but that is why we do not have to depend on ourselves. The Bible tells us that Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit, which means God helped him have self-control. If we try to fight Satan and temptation on our own, it is difficult. If we ask God to fill us with the Holy Spirit to help us fight Satan and temptation, we can be strong and victorious like Jesus.Review Key Scripture Verse: For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. — 2 Timothy 1:7Go over the Take Away Questions from Week 1:What is something you can did to work towards having self-control at school and at home?Describe a time when you had to maintain your self-control last week. What does self-control mean to you? How would you explain it to a friend that didn’t know what it meant?Team Building Exercise:Marble and SpoonFor this game, you will need a few marbles and spoons. Have the children stand in a line behind the starting place. The first child will place the spoon in their non-dominant hand then place the marble on the spoon. At the count of three, the child is supposed to walk (NOT run) to the finish line without dropped the marble from the spoon. They cannot touch the marble in any way with their other hang. You can try this game another way by having the children place the spoon in their mouth. Do this multiple times and compare the attempts. Post Team Building Discussion:Did it get any easier with each try? Why or why not?You all had to use a lot of self-control in order to reach the finish line. What are some different things each of you used self-control in order to reach the finish line?God gave us the Holy Spirit to help us maintain self-control. Just like Jesus showed Satan, we showed each other that we have self-control by waiting in line and by being able to make it from start to finish with the marble still on the spoon whether it was in our mouth or in our hand. When we decide to hold our tongue instead of lashing out in anger, we show everyone that we value others and have self-control. Jesus is the best example of self-control so we should look to him for guidance. Week 3As the students come in give them a number 1-4. Once everyone has arrived and you are ready to start the meeting, have the students break into groups per number. Review from Week 1 and 2This month, we have been talking about self-control.
