Fruit of the Spirit: Love (1 Corinthians 13)
Main Point: We must depend on the Holy Spirit in order to show love to others.
Key Verse: So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. - Galatians 5:16a
Materials: a balloon, tape, plastic straw, string, two small signs: SELF and OTHERS
Personal Connection:
• Ask: What do you think of when you think of love? What person shows love to you? How do they show their love to you? You know, I think that more than anything else, every person just wants to know that they are loved. It’s true for me. No matter what is going wrong, I know that I’m loved.
• Ask: Who loves you more than anyone else? God does!
• Ask: Does God show His love for you in His actions? Can anyone can say John 3:16 without looking it up? Have student recite it, or look it up and read it. Say: Now listen to it this way. Leader, say the verse replacing students’ names for “the world” and “whosoever.” (Example: God so loved Isabel, Abby, Haley, Tessa, and Amy, that He gave His one and only Son, that when these precious girls believe in Him they will not perish but have eternal life.)
Hands on Application:
(This activity might be demonstrated in large group, but the kids will have fun doing it themselves. If they have just
seen this, treat this part as a review.)
• Ask a volunteer to read 1 Corinthians 13:4-5. Say: That is quite a list of actions that show love. Jesus had another way of putting this. He said “treat others the way you want to be treated.” (Matthew 7:12) Most of the time, we would rather focus on ourselves than on others.
• Leader, Slide the straw onto the string. Have two kids hold the ends and step back from each other to make the string taught. Give one of the string-holders a sign that says SELF; give the other string-holder a sign that says OTHERS. Say: The straw represents us. We know that we are supposed to show love to other people, but on our own, we don’t have the power to do it all the time. We can’t hold our tongue when we are frustrated with our little brother, or we can’t let go of the things people have done to hurt our feelings. Our focus is on ourselves. Slide the straw all the way toward the SELF side of the string. But believers are not alone! We have God’s amazing Holy Spirit living inside of us. Ask a student to look up and read 1 John 4:16. God is love, and His Spirit, which is perfectly loving, fills us. Leader, blow up the balloon and do not tie it. Ask a student to help you tape the balloon onto the straw (with the opening toward the SELF sign). When we allow God’s Spirit to rule our thoughts and actions, our focus will be on others. Let go of the balloon and it will zoom to the OTHER side.
Group Discussion:
• Read 1 Corinthians 13:4-5 again and discuss. Ask: When is it difficult for you to be patient with someone? When is it difficult to be kind? Are you ever tempted to boast? Etc.
• What should you do in those situations?
Conversation with God (Prayer): Thank Jesus for filling believers with His Holy Spirit. Ask God to help each of us to show perfect love to others this week.
