Getting right down to the reason of why this is finally happening is that our school community isn’t as unified or involved as I would like it to be. From my personal experience, I don’t know half the events in the school unless I 0148082000hear it from another student. I also know with talking to some of SMSA’s very own students and teachers that involvement is what they’ve wanted for a while. This paper can be a chance to keep not only the students but the staff and parents informed with everything that is going on within SMSA. From sporting events we might have missed to possible scholarship opportunities and even seeing what the seniors are up to with their capstone projects is just enough to become unified as a school. -1004493230Vanessa Figueroa (Me), SMSA Senior 0Vanessa Figueroa (Me), SMSA Senior -228253135890Table of Contents: p. 1 : “Welcome to SMSA TIGER NEWS” and college acceptancesp.2 : Capstone Highlights and Note to Parents p.3: SMSA Sports p.4: Scholarships p,4 Pop culture and Ask Skylar?00Table of Contents: p. 1 : “Welcome to SMSA TIGER NEWS” and college acceptancesp.2 : Capstone Highlights and Note to Parents p.3: SMSA Sports p.4: Scholarships p,4 Pop culture and Ask Skylar?CAPSTONE HIGHLIGHTS:As many of you know, the senior class do a project called Capstone which involves giving back to the community or even the school. The point for “Capstone Highlights” is to bring some of the seniors’ capstones to light, more specifically, any advances in their project or just simply wanting to talk about what their capstone is about. An event was held by the Roberto Clemente Life Commemoration Committee on December 1st, of 2014 in which community members, city leader, Boy Scouts, as well as three of SMSA’s seniors, Pichtida Chhean, Jonathan Gegestkas, and Alex Wales. The three of them as well as their mentor and fellow SMSA teacher, Alex Mercado, would meet weekly for several weeks to organize this event. The students’ were recognized and honored by the State Representative Angel Arce due to fulfilling their responsibilities and duties like our youth should be doing. right1397000Briana Caldwell is doing an art gallery for all grades and if you any of you are interested in finding out more feel free to email her at caldwellbriana13@ My capstone is a Student Leadership training program after school on Wednesdays. Clipping Box Tops is an easy way for you to help our middle school buy what it needs. Box Tops are each worth 10? and they quickly add up to real cash for our school. This school year, our school’s earnings goal is $1,000. To help our school, just look for pink Box Tops on products, clip them, and bring them to school. You can drop off Box Tops at the main office or hand them directly to me. For more information on the Box Tops for Education program, including a list of participating products and our school’s progress, visit . - Francesca VelardeMy capstone project focuses on promoting early literacy in the City of Hartford. Recently I started reading to preschoolers at the Hartford Public Library and I’ll be doing some literacy after school and weekend programs soon. I’ve also completed a book drive so I can give out books to young children in Hartford. If you would like to donate more books or would like to support my project in any other way then feel free to contact me at tia324@. – Makeda Barr- Brown 3348656144446Dear SMSA Parents…Dear SMSA Parents…5703570354965\321437080913Hello SMSA Parents! One positive that that team had going for them was youth, which seems to have materialized into a competitive team only one season and a coaching change after. The ladies are only two games away from qualifying for states, with nine more games left to go. Senior captain Brianna Pintavalle said “I think in order to secure a spot in states we have to step it up and compete with the better teams. We play a great first half but fall apart in the 3rd quarter. One quarter isn't enough to repair all the mistakes we've made. We beat the team we’re supposed to beat, that means nothing; we have to continue to play hard the whole game.” It seems that the tigers’ winning attitude is back, and for the fans so is the tiger pride. Written by: Kavon HarrisBOYS BASKETBALLHARTFORD—Ranked No. 2 in Class S Boys’ Basketball, the Sport and Medical Sciences Academy Tigers stay undefeated, moving on in the season with a perfect 9-0 record. The Tiger’s defeated the Bulldogs of Bolton last Friday, the 23rd, with a 79-60 victory.Rashaun Mason led the Tigers Friday night and finished with 23 points. Right beside was Dwayne Bernard, finishing with 21 points. The Tigers’ defense held Bolton without any field goals for the first two minutes and two seconds in the first quarter. With just under six minutes left in the first quarter, Bernard throws up a dunk to get the Tiger’s crowd rowdy. The Tigers’ offensive was unstoppable the first half. Keith Poitier, a junior, goes in for a fast break with just over three minutes left in the second quarter, and is fouled. Poitier went to the line and made it a three-point play. Along with Poitier, teammates Ryan Rivera, Daunte Brinkley and Lorenzo Aikens put several points up on the board to keep the Tigers’ lead. The Tigers held a 39-27 halftime advantage.SMSA surged ahead in the third quarter with a fast start by Bernard who attacked the baseline, was fouled and make it a three-point play. Seconds later, Mason has a big box-out and fast breaks down the court, pulls back in the defense’s face to shoot for two off the right elbow, making the Tigers’ lead 55-30. With 6 minutes and 45 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Bernard hits his second dunk of the night, making the score 62-43. The Tigers’ did run into some foul trouble during the second half, going into double-bonus. Despite the foul trouble, the Tigers’ continued to play hard and drive to the basket, making their offensive unbeatable. The Tigers’ next game is Friday, January 30, home at 7pm against Avon.0330835Written by: Anna Mercaldi00Written by: Anna MercaldiThe Tigers are coached by Milun Mraz and assisted by Daniel Ericson and Erik McKay. 335626451955Super bowl XLIX - Patriots defeated the Seahawks with a score of 28- 24 taking home the Vince Lombardi TrophyAfter the Super bowl, in which Katy Perry and Missy Elliott performed during the half time show, both of the artists’ songs performed were on top of the iTunes charts00Super bowl XLIX - Patriots defeated the Seahawks with a score of 28- 24 taking home the Vince Lombardi TrophyAfter the Super bowl, in which Katy Perry and Missy Elliott performed during the half time show, both of the artists’ songs performed were on top of the iTunes charts32740606985003771900-409575What’s New?!00What’s New?!-742950142875Shanice Lopez, a senior at SMSA, is giving out her very own scholarship called “The Legacy Scholarship.” Two seniors (one boy and girl) will be picked.
