Mixing it Up with Romeo and Juliet

CD Soundtrack

In both the Franco Zeffirelli's and Baz Luhrmann’s film versions of Romeo and Juliet, specific types of music were used to capture the mood and essence of the classic tragedy. To help you make a personal connection to the plot as well as to get you motivated to more fully understand the language, you will create a soundtrack for a new production of the play. Working in small groups to create this project, you must complete the following steps:

1) Using copies of the "Soundtrack Pre-planning Worksheet," for each scene in Romeo and Juliet, gather three key quotes that help explain the main ideas of the scene.

2) For each scene in Romeo and Juliet, select a song that matches the quotes - its mood and/or action.

3) For each scene, write a paragraph that explains how the song you chose represents the scene from the play. Important: Cite the text of the play for full credit.

4) Create a personalized CD cover (with original artwork) with which to present the soundtrack, and burn a CD with the songs on it. A great online source to search song lyrics by word or theme is . Remember - only use music purchased legally!

5) Complete the assignment with a presentation to the class in which you present a few of the choices you made, along with your reasons for doing so.
