Navigating the Escheatment Process

As part of her presentation, Attorney Maria Greenslade will discuss the escheatment process – sources of these funds, how the Treasury safeguards the funds, and the process for an individual to recover unclaimed property. State Treasurer Denise Nappier is often quoted as saying: “The Treasury is one of the few agencies whose job it is to give money back”.  Often people are unaware that they have inherited money; others may have forgotten an old savings account or a payroll check went uncashed.  This is real money!

Maria Greenslade joined the State Treasurer’s office in December 2005 as the Assistant Treasurer of the Second Injury Fund.  In March of 2006, she became the Assistant Deputy Treasurer overseeing both the Second Injury Fund and the Unclaimed Property Division.  

Prior to joining the Treasury, Ms. Greenslade was General Counsel and Deputy Secretary of the State within the Office of the Secretary of the State from January 1999 until December 2005.  Attorney Greenslade was employed by the Office of the Secretary of the State in various positions since 1985, including Managing Attorney of the Commercial Recording Division.  Attorney Greenslade has been an active member of the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) since 2006 and was elected Eastern Regional Vice President in 2013 and 2014.  NAUPA is an affiliate of the National Association of State Treasurers. 

While employed with the Office of the Secretary of the State, Attorney Greenslade served on the Executive Committee of the Business Law Section of the Connecticut Bar Association; was Co-Chair of the Young Lawyers, Corporation, Banking and Business Law Committee; and served as a member of several Law Revision Commissions.  From 1989 to 1999 Attorney Greenslade was an active member of IACA (International Association of Corporate Administrators) and served as an officer on the Executive Board. 

Attorney Greenslade received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Connecticut in 1981, and her J.D. from Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles, CA in 1984.
