Back to School Block Party – on FRIDAY, September 9

Please mark your calendars for the 17th Annual Back to School Block Party at the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center, 201 Reservoir Park on Friday, September 9th from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Enjoy FREE Mellow Mushroom pizza, swimming, door prizes and family fun! Make a child ID with LMPD, and check out Fire Engine 4 from the Frankfort Avenue firehouse.

Women’s and Girls’ Human Rights Event – September 9

Plan to join in on friends, food and fun for Women’s and Girls’ Human Rights on Friday, September 9 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in Jefferson Square for grassroots activism.

Louisville pure tap 5K

Louisville pure tap 5K on Saturday, September 10 at 8:45 a.m. at the Louisville Water Tower, the course will run east and west on River Road. Between 7:00 a.m. – Noon River Road from Zorn Avenue to Indian Hills Trail AND Mockingbird Valley from River Road to Mellwood Avenue will be closed.

|- in small increments. They will conclude their training on Oct. 242 on the Louisville Sports Commission half marathon course. |

Sustainability Story: Trees

With fall approaching, now is the time to begin planning to help  increase our community’s tree canopy by planting a tree.   People often think about planting trees in the spring and summer months when trees are in flower, full of fruit or are covered with beautiful leaves. However, the ideal time to plant is during the tree's dormant season, after leaf drop in the fall and before bud-break in the spring. This time period is the least stressful to the tree because it is not actively trying to grow.

Before you plant, determine the location and select a species that will be able to thrive in the environment, taking into account soil health, sun and overhead obstructions.  Next, select a species that is right for the location.

LMPD on Crime & Safety Walk – September 13

LMPD’s 5th Division has organized a crime and safety walk for next Tuesday, September 13 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Plan to meet at University and Country Club Road. Please plan to attend to get to know the officers who serve the community and help keep neighborhoods safe!

Emergency Preparedness

Tornadoes, ice storms, flooding. Louisville has seen them all. Each can disrupt or even destroy physical households, leaving residents to make the best of a bad situation. You can prepare yourself to do just that. The city's Emergency Management Agency has multiple emergency preparedness guides listed at this link on its website. Take a look and get prepared.

Register to VOTE Online

Since March 2016, Kentuckians have been able to register to vote and update their registrations online at the website  .   Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes says the web portal has been a huge success.  “We have had over 100,000 Kentuckians access it,” Grimes recently told a committee in Frankfort.  “Over 37,000 applications have been processed. Eleven thousand of those applications are new registered voters. The remaining 26,000 are folks who are updating their registration.” The deadline to register for the November 8, 2016 General Election is October 11, 2016.

Metro Parks and Recreation Seeking AmeriCorps Member Positions

Metro Parks’ mission is to take care of all Metro parks properties, enhance environmental resources and grow a sustainable community. As a part of that mission, Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation is searching for Americorps members for various divisions within the organization.

All AmeriCorps members will be serving at sites within Jefferson County, Kentucky. Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation divisions include Urban Forestry and Landscaping, Natural Areas, Jefferson Memorial Forest, and the Volunteer Program. AmeriCorps member positions are full-time and each member is expected to serve a minimum of 1,700 hours during their 12-month term of service. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age by the start of the program to enroll.
