1. The development environment includes the activities and support which are necessary to acquire and represent the knowledge as well as to make inferences and provide explanations. The major players in this environment are the knowledge engineer and the domain expert who act as builders. Once the system is completed it is used for consultation by the non-expert user.

3. K owledge acquisition (KA) is the collection and extraction of knowledge from human experts (e.g. via interviews) and from other sources.
Knowledge representation (KR)is the organization of knowledge (once acquired) in the knowledge base. For example, t\in the form of rules.

5. Facts are information which is fairly known and documented. For example, historical data, availability of resources and alternatives (choices). Rules represent the expert knowledge, for example "If the price of a share is larger than 20 times the per share annual earning, then do not buy it."

9. The justifier, or the explanation facility provides answers to the users. Examples of questions are: "How was a certain conclusion reached?" and "Why is certain information needed by the computer?".
