Setup and Use Instructions

Basic Information for setting up and using the Opticon OPL-9723 barcode scanner

To create a file of barcodes to use for ALEPH inventory purposes, a software file NetO32) which will be used in conjunction with the scanner needs to be downloaded to your computer. This software is on the Opticon CD. Barcodes are then collected with the barcode scanner, downloaded to your computer via NetO32, and can then be used for various inventory services in ALEPH.

DOWNLOADING AND SETTING UP NETO32

1. Put the Opticon CD into the CD drive of your computer. If the following dialog box isn’t automatically presented, open the CD drive on your computer to view the files. In this dialog box, select ‘Open folder to view files.’

2. In the folder list, select Utilities | NetO32. Double-click the SetupNeto32 application file. The setup wizard will take you through the process of installing NetO32 to your computer. All defaults can be accepted.

3. Once NetO32 has been installed on your computer, open it by going to the Start Menu and selecting All Programs | NetO32 and clicking on the executible. Alternatively, if you created a shortcut on your desktop in step 2, double click on it.

4. The application opens. Connect the cradle to your computer using the USB cable provided. IMPORTANT: the cradle must be connected before setting up the software! To setup the software for use, select Tools | Options on the menu bar.

5. In the options box (RS232), make the following changes:

a. COM port should be COM4

b. Baudrate should be 115200

c. Parity should be No

d. ByteSize should be 8 bits

e. Stop bit(s) should be 1

f. IrDA Device should be Litelink compatible

Click ‘Apply’ to save the changes.

6. Click on Dowload in the left pane. Here you can determine in the receiving directory where on your computer you wish to have barcode files saved. Use the file folder icon [pic] to browse for the directory you wish to use. RECOMMENDATION: you may wish to create a folder called ‘barcode files’ in which to save your files. Additionally, select the “Unique” option for downloading files. This will assure that files will not be overwritten – new files are saved with different extensions, numbering between 001 and 999, if a file already exists in the directory. When finished, click ‘OK.’

7. After the changes have been made, it is important to save the communication settings so you do not have to change them each time you open NetO32. To do so, on the menu bar select File | Save As. Name the file ‘My Settings’ and click Save. Each time you open the NetO32 program, you will want to open this file to reload your settings (explained further in downloading barcodes section).

SCANNING BARCODES

1. Be certain the scanner is fully charged before beginning to scan barcodes. The scanner contains a battery, and is charged via the scanner cradle. Full charging takes approximately 6 hours, but the cradle will stop the charging activity once the scanner is fully charged. The light on the scanner will be red as the scanner is charging, and will turn to green when the scanner is fully charged.

2. The scanner is turned on via the middle ‘Trigger’ button. This is the same button that is used as ‘select’ and to scan barcodes. The ‘1’ and ‘2’ buttons allow you to scroll through menu choices, and to select options on the screen. The scanner shuts off automatically after a short period of inactivity.

3. After turning on the scanner, as mentioned above you can scroll through the menu options by using the ‘1’ and ‘2’ buttons. Scroll until you see the ‘Scan labels’ option on the screen. Press the Trigger key to select it.

4. The scanner is ready to scan barcodes. Press the trigger key to register a barcode; you should hear an audible sound, and the scanned barcode will appear on the screen. If you’ve made an error in scanning, you can press the ‘2’ button for Options. This allows you to delete the last item scanned. Before deleting an item, the scanner will give you a warning message – use the ‘1’ or ‘2’ button to complete the action as appropriate. Continue to scan barcodes using the trigger button. When finished, press the ‘1’ button to exit.

UPLOADING BARCODES VIA NETO32

1. Connect the cradle to your computer, via the USB cable. Additionally, be sure the cradle is connected to the electrical outlet.

2. Open the NetO32 program by going to the Start Menu and selecting All Programs | NetO32 and clicking on the executible. Alternatively, if you created a shortcut on your desktop in step 2, double click on it.

3. ‘Open’ or restore your communication settings by going to the menu bar and selecting File | Open. Double-click on the ‘My Settings’ file you created earlier.

4. To prepare the software for the barcode transfer, on the menu bar select Protocol | Start.

5. You will notice the ‘POLLING ID:’ button begins to flash alternating colors – this is a sign that the software is ready to accept the transfer. You will also note that in the Status log box, the program states that the ‘NetO protocol started.’

6. Turn on the scanner using the trigger key. Scroll through the menu options by using the ‘1’ and ‘2’ buttons. Scroll until you see the ‘Send data’ option on the screen. Press the Trigger key to select it.

7. The screen will display the message ‘Transmit Data via Cradle NETO Protocol.” Press any of the three keys to continue.

8. The screen now displays the message ‘Sending File Waiting NetO Connection…’ At this time, place the scanner in the cradle.

9. The file transfers from the scanner to the computer fairly quick. The scanner will give an audible sound when the transfer is complete, and the software status log will indicate the file was received.

10. Go to the file folder where you indicated you wished files to be stores (recommendation was to create a folder called ‘Barcode files.’ You will find a text file containing the scanned barcodes.

11. If you double-click on the file, it should open in Notepad. Here you can select and copy the barcodes and paste them into the appropriate ALEPHADM scratch file for inventory processing in ALEPH.

12. After you’ve verified the file downloaded successfully, in the NetO32 program, go to the menu bar and select Protocol | Stop. The program can then be closed.

13. After the transfer, the scanner automatically prompts with the option to ‘Delete Data File.’ It is important to delete the file (by pressing the 1 key) otherwise the next time barcodes are scanned, they will be added to the previously scanned file. If you do not delete the file at this time, when you are prepared to delete the file, scroll through the scanner screens until you find ‘Delete data.’ After pressing the trigger key to select it, you will then have the option to delete the barcode file.
