"Shake Off The Dust"

A fresh wave of creative talent appears to be sweeping through the Vineyard collective, rising mainly from grassroots level. Here's an invigorating offering from Winnipeg Centre, Vineyard, their second 'live' recording in a year, and featuring a new generation of talented young song-smiths and worship-leaders. The delightfully catchy yet childlike cover conceals the maturity and spiritual intensity of this package's contents. Only the project's title "Shake Off The Dust", gives an indication of what's on offer inside. Those words are taken from the 'Awake, Awake, Oh Zion' passage of Isiaiah 52:1-2, upon which the final song 'Awake' is based. 'God calls us to arise and partner with Him, to shake the dust of lethargy and empty religion off our feet, and to pursue freedom for all peoples' exhorts pastor David Ruis in the sleeve notes. This project expresses that theme in an offering of heart-rendering worship and praise.

The album can be rightfully compared to the two recent Vineyard UK live events, "Come Now Is The Time" and "Hungry", where Brian Doerksen brought together a number of relatively unknown song-writing and vocal talents to create a rich and utterly stunning display of powerful worship. "Shake Off the Dust" does not suffer in this worthy comparison, and is certainly no cheap copy. From the outset, this album reeks of uncompromising passion. Powerful, self-denying lyrics, strong clear vocals, all supported by tight, uncluttered instrumentation, this venture demands your attention. More than that, it virtually commands your wholesale participation. Eight worship-song composers offer their works here, five of them producing the voices which lead the praise throughout this decidedly-attractive 70 minute set. Thus great musical (and lyrical) scope is ensured, from the unusual and intense sound of Kim Johnson (reminiscent perhaps of Jamie Eichler), to the Native American expressions of honour as portrayed in 'Megwich Kchi-Manitou' ('Thank You, great God'), with a powerful atmospheric sound similar to the spontaneous world-music of Kevin Prosch. And as for the gorgeous 'Psalm 91', featuring the tender vocal delicacy of Andrew Smith, this is surely a strong contender for inclusion in Gold USA's 'Best Songs' listing. 'Awake' provides the outstanding finale, featuring strong elements of both jazz and Latin American dance vibes, and including an appropriate swinging brass arrangement. Outrageously delightful.

This is a powerful album, full to the brim with good music, and pulsating with spiritual vitality. I highly commend it.
