Removal & Installation

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

2. If removing the driver's side spring and shock assembly, unbolt the brake master cylinder from the booster and position it aside, but do not disconnect the brake lines.

3. Remove or disconnect the following:

o Upper spring/shock mounting bolts and nuts

o Front wheels

o Stabilizer bar (shaft link) from the control arm

1. Matchmark the lower coil spring mount location to the upper coil spring mount location before removing the shock absorber.

2. Remove or disconnect the following:

o Lower shock absorber nuts and bolts

o Lower ball joint stud from the steering knuckle

o Spring/shock absorber unit from the vehicle

3. Remove the spring from the shock absorber assembly by performing the following steps:

NOTE

If using other than a GM spring compressor, follow the manufacturers instructions regarding the use of the

specific tool you are using.

o Assemble J-34013-B and J-34013-114 on the spring unit.

o Use the wing nuts to secure the tool to mounting holes C-H (lower left corner) and P (upper right corner) for the driver's side shock and to mounting holes A-X-P (upper left) and C-H (lower right) for the passenger's side shock.

o Attach the shock unit to the tools.

NOTE

Make certain that the top of the shock is flat against J-34013-114.

o Close the tools and install the locking pin.

NOTE

Make certain that the mounting ears of the shock are facing downward toward the rear of J-34013-B,

otherwise the shock will not align properly.

o Turn the screw of J-34013-B counterclockwise to raise the shock up to J-34013-114. Be sure that the studs go through the guide holes in J-34013-114 and the top of the shock is flat against the tool.

CAUTION

Do not over-compress the spring! Over-compression can cause tool failure, resulting in severe bodily

injury!

o Compress the spring approximately 1/2 in. (13mm) or 3–4 complete turns of the screw on J-34013-114.

o Insert J-39642-1 on the shock nut, then insert J-39642-2 through J-39642-1 to hold the shock absorber rod in place.

o Remove the shock absorber nut with J-39642-1, while holding the shock rod from rotating with J-39642-2.

o Discard the shock absorber nut.

o Turn J-34013-B clockwise to fully relieve spring pressure and remove the spring from the shock.

o Install J-34013-114 and J 34013-88.

NOTE

Make certain that J-34013-114 and J-34013-88 are aligned so that they can open and close together. If

not properly aligned, they will not function.

To install:

1. Assemble the shock absorber/spring assembly by performing the following procedure:

o Assemble J-34013-B spring compressor and J-34013-114 adapter on the spring unit. Use wing nuts to secure the tool to mounting holes C-H (lower left corner and P (upper right corner) for the driver's side shock and to mounting holes A-X-P (upper left) and C-H (lower right) for the passenger's side shock.

o Install Tools J-34013-114 and J-34013-88.

o Attach the shock unit to the tools.

NOTE

Make certain that the mounting ears of the shock are facing downward towards the rear of J 34013-B!

o Close the tools and install the locking pin.

o Be sure that the spring seats are positioned properly.

NOTE

Make certain that the top of the shock is flat against J-34013-114.

o Turn the screws of J-34013-B counterclockwise to raise the shock up to J-34013-114. Be sure that the studs go through the guide holes in J-34013-114 and the top of the shock is flat against the tool.

NOTE

Turn the screw only enough to secure the shock. DO NOT compress the spring.

o Place J-34013-115 down through the top of J-34013-B, through the top of the shock absorber and onto the rod.

NOTE

Make certain that J-34013-115 is straight with the shock.

o

CAUTION

Do not over-compress the spring! Over-compression can cause tool failure, resulting in severe bodily

injury!

o Turn the operating screw clockwise to compress the spring until the threaded portion of the rod is through the top of the shock. Remove J-34013-115.

o Install a new shock absorber nut.

o Install J-39642-1 on the nut, insert J-39642-2 through J-39642-1 and tighten the nut while holding J-39642-2.

1. Remove the shock/spring assembly from the tool.

2. Install or connect the following:

o Shock/spring assembly on the lower control arm. Torque the lower nuts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).

o Lower ball joint to the steering knuckle

o Stabilizer shaft link

o Front wheel

o Upper shock/spring assembly. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) and the nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).

o Master cylinder
