October 2014
Dear 4-H families and Friends,
(A farewell note from our 4-H Summer Agent, Shelby Springman):
I would like to thank all the 4-H Families and Friends I have had the pleasure and opportunity to work with this summer.
Governor Herbert E. Tamadge said upon being selected a national 4-H Alumni Winner in 1953, "There is no program dearer to my heart than that of the 4-H Club. It has my unqualified support because it is based on the real American way of life, predicated upon the importance of work and dedicated to the advancement of society through the education of the individual.”
Throughout these few short months, I have had the privilege to work with hard-working, dedicated, and goal driven youth. By working with all age groups, I have personally witnessed the positive opportunities and diversity Pierce County 4-H offers to its youth. The various camps, workshops, trips, and contests have provided an educational environment that will create wonderful future leaders! I have thoroughly enjoyed hearing about your projects and the skills you have achieved from them. Keep it up!
During this internship, I have enhanced my communication, time management, and professionalism skills. Having grown up as a Minnesota girl, I have had the chance to learn about the many facets of UW Extension. It has also been a delight celebrating 100 years of Wisconsin 4-H with your county. The barn quilts were truly beautiful!
Thank you for being so warm and welcoming during these past few months. It has been an exciting, fun-filled summer! I have gained new memories and experiences that will be forever cherished. Thank you to the UW Extension staff and 4-H leaders for being helpful and supportive! I have learned so much by listening to your creative ideas and suggestions. I wish you all the best, and it has been an honor getting to know all of you!
Sincerely,

Tid-bits from the Fair Office
Tid-Bits From
the Fair Office
To All Superintendents and Helpers
at the Pierce County Fair:
A great big thank-you to all of you that helped out on Entry Day, Judging Day, Check Out Day, or any other miscellaneous task that the Fair Office asked you to do. Thanks for a job well done, without your help the fair would not have run as smoothly. Thanks a million for volunteering and we hope to see you at the Fair next year!
The Fair Staff Ann, Kenny, Tammy, Rose, and Kenny’s Crew
Plaques and Premium Sponsors
There are many area businesses, 4-H clubs and individuals who donate time, money, and plaques for the Fair. Please take time to send a thank you to them for their support if you were awarded a trophy.
Fair Premium Checks
Fair premium checks have been printed. You will get them or have already got them from your club leader at your 4-H club meeting. It is very important that you cash your check as soon as possible. State Aid for our fair is lost on all un-cashed checks. We ask that you cash your check immediately.
Recycled Ribbon Program
Have you ever given a thought as to what to do with all your Pierce County Fair Ribbons? How about recycling them? If you happen to have any old ribbons, instead of throwing them away, we would love them back (even some of them) to reuse again. Of course, they need to be in good condition and not have any writing on the tag. Please drop them off at the Fair Office or give them to your club leader.
We will accept Jr. Fair and Open Class ribbons. If you aren’t interested in keeping all your ribbons, please consider donating them back to the fair. As budgets continue to tighten, every little bit helps.
Future Fair Dates
2015 - August 13-16
2016 – August 11-14
Club Signs
We had a good number of signs that were put up by clubs advertising the Fair. Thank you to the clubs who helped promote the Pierce County Fair in their areas. Some clubs even did two signs or double sided signs. We hope to increase the number of clubs participating for next year’s fair. Over the winter months is a great time to start working on your fair sign for next year.
If you put up a sign and have not notified Ann that it has been taken down, you have not been paid for it. Due to issues with the Highway Department having to mow around signs in the fall, we had changed our policy that you do not get paid until it is taken down. So if you have not been paid, please email Ann Webb at awebb@co.pierce.wi.us tell us when it was taken down, the number of signs and if they were new or reused signs. Any questions? Call Ann at 715-273-6874. The fair office is on very limited hours for the remainder of the year.

Thank you to Country Partners for the trees and benches they donated before this year’s fair!! It helps add to the many reasons our Pierce County Fair is one of the best Fairs in the state!

2014 Award Trip Information
NEW FORMAT FOR ALL AWARD TRIP APPLICATIONS
Are you interested in Space Camp, Traveling to Washington D.C. or Atlanta, doing Service Learning in a new cultural setting, or exploring more about leadership in and around Wisconsin? Consider applying for a 4-H Award Trip. These trips are funded at anywhere from 50-75% cost share by the Pierce County 4-H Adult Advisors from funds raised through the Foodstand and Platbook Sales. It’s a great learning opportunity! This year instead of using the ME form, the 4-H Awards Committee is adopting a new system. So what’s required to apply for a trip? Well, the good news is, you’ve already done part 1 by completing your 4-H Record Book. Here are the other requirements:
✓ Complete a 1-2 page cover letter describing your leadership and your commitment to your 4-H goals as laid out in your 4-H Record Book.
✓ Provide an adult recommendation
✓ Complete and turn in the 4-H Award Trip Preference Form checklist
✓ These items are due by November 17, 2014.
All trip applicants will then take part in an interview process where they can tell the Committee more about their project area skills and knowledge and leadership goals.
Consider applying for a Pierce County 4-H Award trip today!
Food Preservation
Processing Reminders
As our gardens grow and the summer comes to an end, please remember to follow USDA approved recipes and processing times while canning. This will ensure a safe and quality product. Below is a list of locations to find approved recipes:
Keep in mind that you should only use standard canning jars that are manufactured specifically for home canning. If you have any questions, please contact Lori Zierl at the Extension Office.
2014 Herdsmanship Results
All 4-H Clubs and FFA Chapters are automatically entered into herdsmanship. Based on the number of animals they sign up in their fair entry forms, clubs and chapters are split into either large or small herds. It is a premium award for the club or chapter to maintain a clean, safe, and creative display of their animals to the public fairgoers. The exhibit is planned and constructed mainly by exhibitors, and it is judged on a variety of topics. Topics include: cleanliness, neatness, and general appearance of exhibits, conduct and appearance of exhibitors present, storage of feed and equipment, originality of decorations, and quality of animals. Species judged in this year’s competition included beef, swine, sheep, dairy, rabbit, goat, and horses. Judges this year were pleased with the creativity of the exhibits! A couple helpful hints for next year are to freshen up bedding if it is starting to smell or get messy and to have an exhibitor present by your club/chapter.
Congrats to this year’s Herdsmanship winners!

4-H RE- Enrollments are Now “On-Line” for Project Year 2014-15
If you are already a member- To RE-Enroll go to the same 4-H Online” webpage at:
If you don’t remember your password click the □ I forgot my password box. Then put in the family email you used to create your profile last year and a new password will be emailed to that email address. Once you go in using the new password you can change it to something you all will remember.
DO NOT CREATE A NEW PROFILE IF YOU ALREADY HAVE ONE! Call the Extension Office if you have trouble getting into yours. Do not start a new one, that will cause problems. If you are adding a family member just go into your existing family profile and click add youth and add the new member information to your family account.
Once you get in your family account, hit the big orange button CONTINUE TO FAMILY. Then select a member and edit it. You will need to change any personal information that may have changed since you signed up last year at that time, and agree to the 4-H terms again. Your projects from the previous year will already be in each individual member record. You will need to delete old projects you are no longer taking for this year or add new projects you want to add. PLEASE don’t hesitate to call the UW Extension Office. Sandy and JoAnna are here to help you with any questions or problems you have. We welcome the calls!
We WILL NOT be using the 4-H Project literature feature to create Club literature orders again this year. You will need to let your club leader know of any literature you would like to check into ordering.
Again this year, the UWEX office will need to “confirm” every enrollment before they are fully accepted into the “4-H Online” system so you will read pending until we confirm you.
Check with your Club Leader regarding a possible soft enrollment due date for your Club (Note: this may be prior to November 1st). Club Leaders will have Manager status and will also be checking-over everyone’s enrollment before the UWEX office confirms the enrollment.
You must be enrolled in the 4-H Online System by NOVEMBER 1st, 2014 for the 2014-15 4-H Year.

Pierce County Older Members have made rain barrels for a fundraiser. These rain barrels are already made and ready to pick up from the UW Extension Office. Please help sell these rain barrels.
Spread the word to anyone you know that would like a rain barrel and help sell them to earn funds for Pierce County 4-H Older Members so you can go on fun outings, have pizza and ice cream party/meetings, offer trainings and workshops and stuff like that!
You can help by making posters and putting them up in places you think would be a great place where people can see them. Or by sending them to your (or your parents) email or facebook friends.
Let us know if you come up with another way to help promote these rain barrels and we will get your idea out in our next newsletter!! Thanks for helping! If you need a photo emailed let us know. These rain barrels are already made and ready to go. They just need to call the UWEX Office at
715-273-6781 to set up a time to come in and get one. They can pay when they pick it up!
October is National 4-H Reads Month – Consider Using
“Badger State Buddies”
Meet the Badger State Buddies in a new children’s book. Third and fourth graders explore Wisconsin history and serve their community. While engaging in 4-H activities, they learn about themselves, their state, and the value of strong relationships. Use Badger State Buddies to promote 4-H in our communities.
Jacob just moved from one Wisconsin city to another. Lucy hides her shyness by caring for a dog named Lambeau. Roberto is looking for a friend at his new school. And Hana wants to belong as much as the others want to. When the four of them join Badger State Buddies 4-H, they try out new hobbies and help solve each other’s problems. But when an emergency happens in their town, will they be ready to handle it?
• Purchase copies of the book and donate them to your local public and school library
• Create a 4-H display at school, a community center, or the public library. Use Badger State Buddies book as a promotional tool.
• Take part in “October is Wisconsin 4-H Reads Month”
$1 from the sale of each book supports the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation.

Bi-o-metrics: The process by which a person’s unique physical and other traits are detected and recorded by an electronic device or system as a means of confirming identity
Imagine you’re James Bond, and you have to get into a secret laboratory to save the world. But first, you have to get past the security system. It requires more than just a key or a password! Come explore the science behind Biometrics, November 15th, 2014. Instead of using something you have (like a key) or something you know (like a password), biometrics uses who you are to identify you. Biometrics can use physical characteristics, like your face, fingerprints, irises or veins, or behavioral characteristics like your voice, handwriting or typing rhythm. As we explore the science of biometrics we will use our powers of observation to uncover our missing 4-H clover. This is one day camp you will not want to miss. We will have a light snack so please note any food allergies.
