“Protecting, serving and educating America’s future”

January 30, 2008

Our community has suffered another tragic loss of one its students. Gina Durham passed away as a result of an accident while visiting Atlantic City. Gina was one of our students who really immersed herself in the Stockton Community. She was a Resident Assistant, President of the Stockton Entertainment Team, former Student Senator, participant in SOAR, member of Circle K, and a true student leader. She was always available to help a fellow student or approach a college administrator to solve a community issue. She touched so many lives in her short time here and she will be sorely missed. Our condolences go out to all her friends and family with a reminder that our counseling center is available to assist with the loss of our friend.

Many times students have asked why we have fire drills in residence halls and why they have to leave a building when a fire alarm activates? There are two answers: one, it is the law; second, we need to prepare ourselves in the event there ever is a fire and evacuation becomes necessary. If our community does not prepare ourselves for disasters, and educate our residential students in the procedures to follow when those events occur, the risk of injury or death is much greater. So, the next time you are woken from your bed or disrupted from your class by a fire alarm, assume it is a real fire and quickly move to your designated location. Await the arrival of the police and emergency services who will ensure the building is safe for re-entry.

A reminder to our community that we will be having another Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training session this spring. It is a 20 hour course that will prepare you to assist our community in the event of an emergency. We currently have nearly 100 faculty, staff and students trained and certified as CERT members and we have used their services during many recent emergency incidents. Dennis Lepore, Office of Health and Safety, X4751 will be advertising the training dates when they are established. Sign up to volunteer and help your community when we need your help the most and thanks to all those CERT members who have helped us at campus emergencies.

REMINDER: If you have not yet signed up for the NEW EMERGENCY TEXT MESSAGING system available for free, please do so by visiting the Stockton Home Page and following the instructions. You can sign up in several minutes if you have a text-capable cell phone. We used the text messaging system for last week’s cancellation of classes due to snow and it worked very well as messages were delivered via the text messaging system to those signed up within minutes of the decision being made to cancel classes. It is important to note that the system will ONLY be used for emergency messages not for non-emergency campus notifications.

TIP OF THE WEEK: When driving during the winter season, be very cautious of “black ice”. Many parts of a roadway may be wet and not icy, however, overpasses and exit ramps will freeze before the main roadway. Also, if we have had several days of very cold weather which has frozen the ground, any initial precipitation on the road or overpass may freeze when it hits the road. Use extra caution when driving in these conditions and allow yourself extra time to get where you are going so you get there safely.

Remember, safety is everyone’s business, so please report any safety or security concern to us at X4390 or dial 9-1-1 in an emergency.
