Word Choice
Word Choice
Goal: Be precise (exact, specific) and concise (no wasted words- short, sweet, and to the point) with no pronoun problems.
Common precise issues:
• Linking verbs: is, are, was, were (make as many action as you can)
• Vague words: stuff, thing(s), fun, cool, bad
• Hedging words:
*very, really, pretty, so (meaning “a lot”), extremely
*sort of, kind of, seems to be, somewhat
• Overusing the “synonyms” function: don’t use a word if you haven’t heard it before, if it doesn’t sound like you, or if you’re not sure of what it means.
•
Common concise issues:
• I believe, I feel, I think, in my opinion
• Would have to be
• Any repetition
• “Say nothing” sentences:
*All teenagers are different.
*Some people like pizza, and some people don’t.
*Everyone has their own opinion
• “Obviously”: if it’s obvious, why are you writing about it?
• “As I said before”: if you said it before, why are you saying it again?
Pronoun problems:
• NEVER, NEVER, NEVER use any form of the word “you” in your paper unless it is a direct quote
• The words “we” and “us” are dangerous: make sure it is clear who you are referring to in your paper
• “Everyone” is dangerous: there are few statements you can make about everyone.
